Essick Air E35 000 2-Speed Tabletop Humidifier
Venta Airwasher -White, 5014536
minuses: no humidistat to control on/off
This is my fifth humidifier. Anything with a filter/wick is troublesome in maintainance and costly to replace. Bought the small one for bedroom, then bought medium one for living room. Bought one for nieces baby shower. Would not hesitate to continue buying if needed. One of the best appliances I ever bought.

Hanover HANAW08A Energy Star 8,000 BTU 115-Volt Window-Mounted Air Conditioner
The sleep function is nice, but you can't leave the speed on low to use that function and the mid and high speeds get pretty noisy simply due to the smaller units air outlets. It's all air movement noise.
There are the usual pings and pops from the compressor, but nothing abnormal. There is a louder than usual bang when the compressor turns off, but again, not excessively loud.
I'd give it 5 stars if the compressor was better balanced and the fan design was changed to lower the noise along with more thought out programming of it's features.
There was an issue the first week or so where the fan was rubbing the foam inside and it squeaked a bit, the fan has now worn down the foam that the noise no longer exists.

Room Shocker
I tried deodorizer from the pet store, Orange-Oxy, Mr. Clean w/ Fabreze, and Pet Odor Fabreze spray, during the course of the week. None worked, only straight vinegar misted with a spray bottle seemed to make a small dent on the horrible, permeating stench, and it didn't work very well.
I decided to give "Room Shocker" a try. Based on the mixed reviews I wasn't sure about it, but at this point I was willing to give it a shot. I purchased a 4 pack of the shockers (I have a large house), and this Saturday I released them, as per the instructions, in the living room, kitchen, upstairs office, and the hallway connecting the bedrooms. The wife and I left the house for about 2 and a half hours while they worked.
When we reentered the lower floor the smell of chlorine was prominent, but NO SKUNK! We opened all the downstairs windows, door, and activated the paddle fans. I moved the 2 room shockers from the downstairs to the upstairs bedrooms, plus the one that had been in the hallway, and closed all the room doors to allow the shockers to outgas for another 2 hours in those individual rooms. We then removed all the shockers from the house and opened up the upstairs to outside air, as we had the downstairs.
On Sunday you could still faintly smell the chlorine, but STILL NO SKUNK, ANYWHERE! Even after 4 baths in various products and home remedies, the dog still faintly smells like skunk, so if she was near you, you could still get a whiff of the odor, but THE HOUSE WAS 100% CLEAR of SKUNK ODOR!
Therefore I can say that I highly recommend the product for use against skunk odor that gets into your home.
I only gave 4 stars because of Biocides shipping practice. I had ordered the product "Overnight" for an added $28+ to the package price. The item did not arrive "overnight", even though I had put the order in well before their 1pm PST cutoff time. It turns out they use USPS as their shipper, and USPS has a odd definition of "overnight" that varies depending on your zip code. If you read Biocide's shipping policy CAREFULLY you learn about this, but in my opinion, if you're going to charge $28 for overnight, use FedEx, or UPS, and don't allow the definition to be controlled by the vagaries of the USPS! It comes across as odd, and deceiving.

Avanti WDP75 Hot and Cold Water Dispenser
After our old dispenser gave up the ghost after twenty plus years, we looked at each other and said, 'what do we do now?' We tried shopping for another one locally but nobody had what we were looking for and we were, quite frankly, spoiled.
What do we like about the Avanti?
As the poet put it, let me count the ways.
First of all, because of its Energy Saver feature, the Avanti consumes less electricity than our old dispenser which ran constantly. It was also noisy. The Avanti, in contrast, is very quiet.
The Avanti features a neat little safety lock on the hot water faucet, which the old dispenser did not The storage space in the bottom, while it doesn't keep anything cold, is quite handy.
The Avanti's white plastic square design looks clean and nice. Our old brown metal dispenser did not. Also, unlike some of the round dispensers we looked at, the Avanti is not 'tippy'. Since it sits next to the kitchen doorway and a heavy traffic area, this was a real concern.
We also looked at dispensers that pumped from the bottom as well as the reviews and decided they were not for us.
The only CON was a chemical, almost musty, taste in the water for a few weeks after we got the Avanti, but that is now gone.
All in all, we are extremely pleased with the Avanti. It's much, much better than our old dispenser and we definitely give it 5 stars.
Update 7/3/2012
Now there is a problem. (Another reviewer had the same thing happen to them in December 2010 and, in their case, it was a broken hot water line.).
When I changed the three gallon bottle for a fresh one yesterday, everything seemed fine.
As recommended, (and as usual), I left the unit unplugged, ran 4 cups of water out through the hot water faucet then plugged in the unit and turned it on.
My husband woke me at around 11 p.m. with the news that there was a huge puddle around the dispenser and what should he do? I unplugged the unit, removed the bottle and emptied the reservoir through the hot water faucet. A seam along the top of the bottom cabinet door was wet and the drip catcher under the faucets was full.
Not wanting to spend the rest of the night working on the problem, I unplugged the unit and removed the bottle altogether.
After carefully drying everything off this afternoon, I replaced the bottle, removed another 4 cups of water via the hot water faucet, plugged in the unit again and turned on the hot and cold water. At first everything seemed fine. Then an hour later, I found another puddle. This time it appeared to be the result of an overflow from the reservoir, and the water level, which I had carefully marked on the outside of the bottle, had gone down about 25%.
We have spent the rest of today trying this and that. Now the new bottle is empty, there is still a puddle of water on the floor, tomorrow is July 4th and it's too late in the day to call Avanti's Customer Service. However, first thing, Monday, I'm going to call them and see what they have to say.
Film at 11.
Update, Tuesday, July 10, 2012
I called Avanti's Customer Service number yesterday. Once I reached a technician, she questioned me about the problem in detail and I listed all the steps I had followed.
She said, in her opinion, we needed a service call and gave the number of an authorized repair shop in our area.
The repairman arrived first thing this morning. After he checked out the entire unit and found no problem, he called Avanti's Customer Service.
The Avanti technician suggested that he look at the water bottle. He did and, sure enough, there was our problem. We'd been using three gallon plastic molded bottles which we'd purchased from the same health food store where we get our distilled water.
The bottle has four seams around the top, which fits snugly into the collar above the reservoir. When we examined the last bottle we used, we noticed some extra material on a couple of the seams. This extra material is known in the plastic molding industry as 'flash' and it's supposed to be trimmed or buffed off as soon as the part comes out of the press. (More years ago than I care to count, I worked as a press operator in a plastic molding plant which made glasses for American Airlines. So I know all about 'flash'.)
The Avanti Customer Service technician said this is not an uncommon problem with these plastic bottles.
As the repairman explained, the Avanti dispenser's operation depends on maintaining an intact vacuum seal between the bottle's top and the reservoir. When a defective bottle is installed, the sheer weight of three gallons of water creates the necessary vacuum seal and it'll stay that way with no leaks until a certain amount of water is removed from the dispenser. However, as the bottle's level goes down, it weighs less and raises slightly. This, in turn, exposes the four seams around the bottle's top. The space between the the extra seam material, or 'flash', creates an air space between the bottle and the reservoir collar. When this happens, the vacuum seal is lost. The bottle level then starts gradually going down by itself for no apparent reason and, after an hour or so, there's water all over the floor.
Because our dispenser is over two years old and out of warranty, we had to pay for the service call. However, it was worth it to us and I will still give the Avanti Water Dispenser an unequivocal five stars both for their Customer Service department's helpful and courteous response and the excellence of the product itself.
December 9, 2012
Update: Our Avanti dispenser is still working fine and, to date, we've had no more problems. I will say though, for anyone who might be interested, we only use distilled water which we purchase at a local health food for .89c per gallon. It's also very important to remove 4 cups of water from the dispenser via the hot water faucet immediately after replacing the bottle.

Holmes Cool Mist Humidifier
To our surprise this unit works as intended albeit the unusually loud fan (even on the lowest setting). But to us the white noise it generates is actually welcomed in our bedroom. It's not any louder than my custom gaming computer fans that i leave on running at night. This product is used in our room which measures 17ftx17ft. The air humidity at night is just right now. For the first time in the winter months me and the wifey got good sleep!! we both woke up with no sore throats or dry sinuses!
So in short review here are the PRO's and CON's
PRO's : Works as advertised. capable of humidifying a room of 17ft x 17ft with ease. Water tank holds a good amount of water. Run time on it is 16hrs filled. Easy to fill tank. Easy to clean. Comes with 2 extra filters.
CON's : Slightly loud fan (if you like white noise at night) then this would be a plus :) Would be nicer if it had one more lower level for the fan speed for the people that complain about the slight noise.
This product is worth the price! would recommend it to anyone looking into a Humidifier for a bedroom or a living room.

Miele : S163 Universal Mini Upright Vacuum
*The only difference between the S163 and S168 is the HEPA filter on the S168...I found it was significantly cheaper to buy the S163 and add the HEPA filer purchased separately.
It is extremely difficult to find a bagged stick vac. For those of us with allergies (or just aversion to dust) "bagless" vacuums are not attractive. Dumping the dust bin re-releases lots of junk (especially the smallest, lightest particles) back into the air.
I bought the Miele S163 simply because it was the only bagged stick vac I could find several years ago. I am thrilled with it. It has very strong suction and rolls easily across our hardwood floors. It does not blow or push around crumbs like many other vacuums, it actually picks them up on the first pass. The chamber is sealed and after several years of use the inside of the vac is literally like new, every speck of dust has been trapped in the bag or filter.
Because I only use mine on hard floors, I find I don't have to change the bag more often than our large canister vac (which we use for carpets). Even very dirty hard floors don't generate nearly as much "waste" as carpets, and I generally change the S163 bag every month, even though it's usually not full. I have a cat and two Cheerio-eating children and use the vac at least once per day.
Bottom line: this vacuum has kept my kitchen floor crumb-free for several years and shows no sign of quitting anytime soon.
Kishu Charcoal Pitcher Stick
During dry Summers the faucet water gets visibly cloudy and even smells, really disgusting.
Your choices are to buy bottled water or use a good filter.
Being urban I do not have a car so I have to carry everything from the grocery. Bottles are a nuisance and expensive. And aren't those plastic bottles some kind of oil petrified in a state hat doesn't bio degrade well anyway? So I use filters. I have Britta and PUR.
With Britta I have to guess when they are used up plus half of the Britta pitcher is the "drip tank." So for the given volume you get half as much water.
The faucet mounted PUR is handy and has a light to indicate when it is used up. How does it know? Anyway both are not inexpensive and both result in tossing more plastic.
I learned about the Kischu from a news story I stumbled on on a Denver television station. I bought a couple and tried one out.
I use a covered pitcher really a non-PABA water bottle.
I pour my glass of water then add new and put back in the refer.
I drink over a gallon of water a day and after 3 months I have boiled it once.
( It began to look grayish until boiled )
Seems to work fine, no bad taste and the water is clear and no plastic to carry out!
I recommend.

Honeywell Enviracaire HEPA Air Purifier
**Kimmer (another reviewer) has kindly uploaded a wonderful youtube video to demonstrate the noise level, title: "Honeywell Enviracare 50250 air purifier". Since your computer speaker will affect the demonstrated noise level, make sure you gauge the noise to Kimmer's voice.**
Pros: Powerful, inexpensive, permanent HEPA filter, easy to maintain, 360 degree air intake and output, portable, accessible replacement parts, good support from Kaz, a 5 year limited warranty.
Cons: Noisy, high power consumption, not stylish.
Previously I owned the Honeywell HFD-130 Germicidal Tower HEPA Air Purifier with Permanent IFD Filter, but due to its ozone emission and my respiratory problem, I returned it back to HomeDepot. I got fully refunded and bought this Honeywell 50250N on the same day and loved it. I have a mild allergy. I sneeze and experience itchy eyes when I am outdoor, but stop when I am at home (where my purifier is). I recommend two important points when shopping for a purifier: (1) always examines the CADR number. It is a decent performance indicator, (2) always buys an air purifier adequate for your need. A 100 sq ft purifier will not work for a 1000 sq ft living space.
Honeywell 50250N is a true HEPA filter purifier with a 250 CADR, which translates into a recommended 375 square feet usage space. Currently, this purifier is being sold at ~$160. It has been quoted as the only purifier
CRYSTAL QUEST® Whole House Single 10" x 5.0" Water Filter System
The plumber that did excellent precise work everywhere else, spent 4 hours trying to get the nozzles on the unit to seal properly before he came to me and asked for the customer support number of the company. We both spoke with the support rep who claimed that there should be no problem. The issue appeared to be that the hex adapters that come with the unit were not sealing. The CQ rep insisted we just had to add more teflon tape and crank the wrench harder. I consulted with two other plumbers I know who concurred with the GC's plumber with the water pressure in our line there is no way that this would work because the threads in the unit head are NOT TAPERED! We ended up picking up another water filter locally that was pretty much the same. To make matters worse, CQ never responded to my subsequent requests for a refund and the unit is still boxed up in my garage.
All in all this was a very disappointing product and I would not recommend it or any Crystal Quest product.

Shop-Vac 1030000 Air Cleaner Filtration System
I'm also a woodworker, however, and I don't think I would ever consider using this as THE air filtration tool for my shop. I think they made a mistake by calling this a Shop Air Cleaner; if you have a woodshop and therefore generate a lot of dust, you may want to look at stepping up to a tool better suited for permanent installation on the ceiling.
For me, this tool is portable so that I can use it outside of my shop. So, if you would like something portable and affordable that keeps your lungs and house a little cleaner, I think it's worth the money.

14ALL Vicks Cut-to-Fit Replacement Carbon Pre-Filter
OSKAR Humidifier
FIRST UNIT. Works fine for one month, then the "no water" light came on even when the unit is filled. (Memo: Do not order from "Wizard Electroland." Seller refuses to reimburse shipping even though the item is defective. Amazon kindly intervenes.)
SECOND UNIT. Order from Amazon. Happy to have my brand new humidifier. Fill gently with water to the exact specified point. Turn "on." Item does not turn on. IT DOES NOT TURN ON.
THIRD UNIT. Order from Amazon. Kind of happy to have my brand new humidifier. It works fine for three days. Then last night at 5 a.m. it wakes me up with a tisk, tisk, tisk, risk sound. Sound mysteriously disappears; I fall back asleep and have bad dreams about humidifiers.
I also must be crazy for ordering three of these, but here is why: It is nearly impossible to find a non-ultrasonic humidifier. The design and size are perfect for my apartment. Cleaning and refilling (the most onerous parts of humidifying) are easy. It is made by a Swiss company (used to mean something) and they have very good customer service. (I contacted them for more detailed cleaning instructions than the manual provides.)
I don't know what else to say. In theory it is the perfect humidifier, but order at your own risk.

SPT 8,000BTU Single Hose Portable AC
Set up was easy and was up and running in half an hour enjoying the fast cooling from this no nonsense portable. Installation instructions were clear, controls on the unit and the remote easy for us to understand. The one thing I wish they had on this is a "follow me" feature on the remote that sounds useful, but even without that extra we are very much enjoying our cool new machine (pun intended) and am seriously considering another one over a econo-window unit.
The fan is loud on high (so you do have to leave the general vicinity to take a phone call or turn up the volume on the TV but I couldn't imagine any others not having the same affect) and just this side noticeable on low (very tolerable IMO), there is no in-between setting. Seems solidly built and practical for what you get and ion high this unit cooled a home office and bedroom (connected by a hallway) very well. The venting was straight forward, not sure about the draining yet for the condensation/water pan but it is fairly easy to access.
Staying cool without too much fuss so this is highly recommended!

Frigidaire FAD704DUD 70 Pt. Dehumidifier
After six months it started making a lot of noise. I checked it and found that the cooling coils were completely iced up, totally blocking the air flow. I let it defrost completely and tried again, with the same icing resulting after a few hours. I checked the manual. which gave "room temperature is too low" as the cause. Doubtful, I thought, but it is winter and only about 60 degrees in here. So I waited to spring and tried again. Now there is no cooling effect at all, and no water output. Obviously the icing was from the cooling fluid leaking, and finally it all leaked out resulting in the total lack of operation.
This is my second Frigidaire dehumidifier. The first had a fan motor failure after six months.
Obviously Frigidaire is no longer synonymous with quality.
By the way, it is not possible to contact Frigidaire customer service by their 800 number. The option for "speak to a representative" results in the computer giving a long-distance number to call. On previous occasions, I have had no luck with trying to contact them via their web site, either. However I tried again, this time requesting return contact by telephone.
This time they actually responded, but by email despite my request for contact by phone. The response was "I would like to offer you a 60% rebate towards a new unit." My response to that was, quoting the manual, "The unit has a FIVE YEAR WARRANTY period during which 'Frigidaire will repair or replace any part in the Sealed Refrigeration System....,' so why should I have to pay 40 percent?"
Their reply: "We apologize we will not be able to arrange service for your dehumidifier. Regrettably, escalating service costs have rendered repairing dehumidifiers a thing of the past as these units are no longer serviced.
Please let us know if you wish to accept the rebate offer so we may assist with issuing a rebate letter outlining details of the rebate as soon as possible. Please also note that not only will you receive the 60% rebate but as an added bonus when you receive the new dehumidifier the warranty will start over again from day one."
I wrote them again, requesting that they honor their written warranty. They replied "Thank you for contacting Frigidaire. We apologize that we are not able to assist."
In other words, they are refusing to honor the written warranty in the owner's manual. I have filed a complaint with the FTC, but expect little assistance since I am just a single citizen.
It is not only Frigidaire's product quality that is suffering....
Update, 06/24/2011: At N. Ha's suggestion (see comments on this review), I complained to the BBB in Georgia, where the Frigidaire humidifier service center is located per the manual. Today I received a phone call from Electrolux about my complaint. The woman said they wanted to "buy my unit back" for the full amount I had paid for it. She refused to call this a refund. However, she said I do not have to ship this unit they are buying to them, only the label with the model and serial number plus my original receipt. I guess calling it a refund might set a precedent. I, of course, accepted the offer and am awaiting the paperwork.
So, it looks like the only way to get satisfaction for the written warranty they have unilaterally decided to cancel for all current and future customers is to complain to the BBB. I hope many will do so.
