PetClean Tower Air Purifier

I recently added three (abandoned) cats to my household. I now have five cats in a small condo.I have 4 litter boxes and use premium litter, zero odor litter spray, scoop twice daily and do complete litter changes twice weekly.

I have a lot more cat hair ,litter dust and lingering litter odor in my home with the additional cats.So I had been looking into purchasing an air purifier to improve the air in my home.

I was excited to see this product in my local Target. The name of the product "PETCLEAN AIR" and the wording and pictures on the carton stating this was an air purifier for pet owners convinced me that this was the unit for me!

The unit is off white in color and looks nice out of the box.It uses replaceable HEPA TYPE filters and replaceable carbon type pre-filters.It also has an ionizer feature that can be turned off if desired. (NOTE: I have successfully used a stand alone ionizer in my cat area in the past so I liked this feature)

The unit has three speed settings.I found the high setting to be very loud.On the high setting this unit blows a lot of cool air...This would be hard to deal with in the winter but pleasant in the summer. It does not power oscillate but you can manually adjust it.I would have tolerated that had this machine been effective. The medium setting is nice and barely noticeable but I feel that it's too weak of a setting to properly clean the air.The low setting is barely audible and very weak.

I left this on high for three days and noticed no change in the scent of my home.I have a small place and used this in my living room (too loud for bedroom) I did notice a slight reduction in the dustiness of my home.

Overall, this unit disappointed me. As a pet owner I was excited to see an air purifier supposedly designed for my situation. This unit does not deliver on it's promise to reduce pet odors in the home. I would not recommend this unit to other pet owners looking to improve the air quality in their homes.

Metro Vacuum MB3CD Air force Master Blaster 8-HP Motorcycle Dryer

I had the smaller unit and it performed fantastic but this one with double the power blows it out of the water. I use it to dry my autos and no longer use broom in the garage but just blow it out with this blower. I love it!!

Surround Air XJ-3000SF Spare Filter

This is the replacement filter for the surround air. After I had spent months doing research on different air filtration systems, I did not just look at infomercials. I decided on surround air because it had 5 levels if purification and sanitizing. It was not super expensive. It had a longer warrenty than most. And a very important detail is that it was not expensive to maintain changing filters and such, it turns out to be about $2.50 a month. That seems a fair price to pay for waking with a clear nose and no headache.

2 Kenmore HEPA Filter #86889

I was spending a lot of money at Sears for these filters. How happy I was to find this seller. The filters arrived in less than a week and I thoroughly examined them expecting to find some difference but found them to be exactly the same as Sears. I will never buy them at Sears again. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Bionaire Cool Mist Humidifier

I bought this unit from Costco. At very beginning, I'm little concerned about this product, because there are not a lot of reviews @ amazon. And the only review I found said very badly about this product. But after I used it for couple weeks, I'm positive to say this is a great product. There's no wet path on the floor after I used it at all. (Not like the other review said.) It's very easy to pour water in. It's also nice that you actually have options to adjust the humidity level.

Austin Air Healthmate Jr Replacement Filter

The item does what it's supposed to do: It filters. It's amazing how much quieter the machine gets when you replace the filter.

Doing the replacement itself is a bit of a dirty affair, because presumably the old filter is full of everything you're allergic to, and you have to pull it right out of the machine, with dust going everywhere, before you put in the new one. I recommend doing it outside.

Big Berkey w/ 2 Black Berkey Filters

I searched for the best water purification technique available primarily because I was shocked at the state of our drinking water and I couldn't just go on blindly dumping chemicals into my body. My criterion was to remove all added chemicals from my drinking water including Fluoride and as an Engineer with a scientific background I needed scientific backing.

Note: The usage of Fluoride in our water systems is controversial, but Ninety-seven percent of western Europe has eliminated fluoride from drinking water. goggle "Fluorosis" and "fluoride side effects", read the article on "about dot com" on "fluoride removal". Read the article on "livestrong dot com" on "side effects of fluoride ingestion". I quote, "Fluoride ingestion has been associated with adverse health effects such as IQ deficits in children, depression, weight gain and heart disease. The "Journal of Applied Clinical Pediatrics" reports that "high fluoride intake has a damaging effect on intellectual ability," and human studies from China, India, Iran and Mexico found that elevated levels of fluoride in children resulted in reduced performance and impaired development of intelligence. The U.S. National Research Council has also found that fluoride affects normal endocrine function, which may contribute to hypothyroidism, or reduced activity of the thyroid gland. Hypothyroidism can lead to fatigue, depression, weight gain, hair loss, muscle pains and heart disease.

I started off with on a friends recommendation the Nikken Pi-Mag which i soon rejected because they independent lab results were not available, fluorine was not removed from the water and I could not trust a MLM companies claims' that were not scientifically verifiable.

I looked at Aquasana and Multipure's product line but I became obvious that the life expectancy was about a year and I would deal with leaks, and defective housing. The reviews for the New Wave were 10Stage Filter were promising on amazon and I bought it right away, but soon grew suspicious of their claims as there were no results posted on their website either. I called New Wave customer service which I must add was great and friendly and asked for the independent lab results, which they emailed. After analyzing the results I was disappointed to see that a company that makes water filters provided results from a lab called, Truesdale lab but back in 1995 (15yrs ago!). Surely they can get this tested recently since both regulations and water quality have changed since then and made this readily available to their customers via their website. Anyway the results they provided showed that it was tested for Cyst Removal (based on the 1988 NSF standard), Lead, Choloform and Lindane removal. Fluorine was not removed which for me was not good enough.

I returned the New Wave Environ and finally found the Berkey filter system which has an additinal fluoride filter as well. Although more expensive (about 250 inclusive of a set of flouride filters), the Berkey filters would be cheaper in the long run as they last between 3,400 gallons to 19,500 gallons depending on water quality, unlike the New Wave Filter's 1500 gallons. Furthermore I liked openness and readily accessible lab results by independent labs such as the University of Arizona, LSU and Spectrum labs (google Berkey lab results). Furthermore they are used by emergency organizations like the Redcross and Unicef.

I must add that there is no perfect system, the fluoride filters usually use an activated alumina filter media and Aluminia has been associated with Alzheimers. I was concerned about any aluminum dust residue left in the water and a little more research revealed the residue to me negligible.

Here is a comparison:

Water boiled in an Aluminium pan for 5mins had: 2.791 ppm aluminum

Colgate toothpaste: 52.878 ppm aluminum.

The Berkey flouride filter after 10 cycles had .037 ppm aluminum and after 20 Cycles: .029 ppm aluminum which in my opinion was negligible and safe.

I hope this helps you and saves you time!

*****update 6 months into using it a filter cartilage just broke! i emailed the company for a replacement and am waiting to hear back! if you can get a RO machine. Dropping the product from 4stars to 3stars.

Emer USA Compacto Canister Vacuum Cleaner

Finding the right vacuum has made me feel a lot like Goldilocks. I have hardwood floors with fringed area rugs. I also have two cats, a child, and lupus, which comes with arthritis all the time, chronic fatigue and pain, and a clog every vacuum known to man case of hair fall out every time I get a flare.

I have a Roomba, which I love, but between my hair fall and the fringe on my rugs, I spend a lot of time responding to "uh-oh, Beep Beep!" and often have to take the thing apart with a screwdriver to unwrap my hair from its brushes. Did I mention that it hates the fringe on my rugs? Love it otherwise, though, even if it takes two hours to do the house.

I have a 12 year old Fantom Fury bagless, which sucks the nap right out of my rugs no kidding. It, too, can be brought to its knees by my hair. The above-the-floor cleaning wand is too short. The thing weighs a ton. It's not great on the floors (it rumbles so hard that the dirt runs away), and it's hard to get around and under furniture and into corners.

I have a little bagless Shark thing, which is pretty good on the floors, but it doesn't get under furniture and does nothing on the rugs. It does well at above-the-ground cleaning, but you have to lift the whole vacuum to reach anything.

My Emer Compacto does everything I need it to do, and it takes me very little time to vacuum the whole house top to bottom. The canister itself is not super light, but I do not need to lift it except to take it out of the utility closet or take it halfway down the stairs. The cord is nice and long, and the wheels roll along very easily. The telescoping wand easily reaches the corners of my relatively high (old victorian house) ceilings, and the floor / carpet head is engineered to go right under beds, couches, whatever kind of furniture you'd rather not move. I was dubious about the lack of a powered brush head, but the floor / carpet head gets my rugs very clean with no need to stop and untangle brushes.

The air filter works well enough that I don't need to dust after vacuuming. And the motor is very quiet for a vacuum.

The only thing I wish is that it had more tools. It comes with the floor / carpet head and a crevice tool. Something for upholstery would have been nice. I absolutely would buy this again, though.

Hoover Duros Power Nozzle Canister Vacuum

my wife had been looking around, for a good while at different styles and types of vacuums. she has tried the bagless styles and was very displeased with them. after many considerations (oreck, kirby and etc.), she chose to try this one. after using it for several weeks, she has stated that she was very glad that we bought his one. i, myself, was totally surprized at the quality of this hoover. it's very well built (not flimsy like most other vacuums at this price), very easy to move around, and has very strong suction power. my wife likes the way that the wands fit together easily, without the cord being in the way (the cord that dangles from most vacuums with the power nozzles) and the fact that you don't have to change one nozzle to another (rug to bare floor) to finish vacuuming, just push the bar from rug to floor and it's done. the only thing that my wife didn't care for was that two of the attachements tools are stored on the wand, which does at times, come off when bumped against something. But other then that, she is very happy with this vacuumm. we have many pets (six all together) that are inside which my wife has to vacuum at least four to five times a week (with all the shedding) and she feels that this vacuum will do the job for a long time (we average about a vacuum every 2 years due to the constant use). over all, with it's sturdy built, power, and user-friendly abilities, we give this vacuum 5 stars!!!!!michael and penny smith

Plato 16oz Teapot

A quaint personal lil teapot artfully designed with noted appreciation to the detail of the gold-plated loose leaf coil. The gold-plated coil placed directly in-front of interior of pour spout extends to tip of spout. Preventing most tea particles from being poured into cup when using loose leaf teas. The gold-plated coil vs. other metal coils eliminates the metallic aftertaste that is created when serving hot/cold teas. The lid is kept on by a glass design feature on top of handle with a steam release hole that can be moved by turning lid. The tea pot is recycled borosilicate glass, varied heat exchange -4 to 300f without a problem, handmade, with the pleasure of using loose leaf or bagged teas. I chose this borosilicate glass teapot for the features mentioned above as well as for the visual esthetics's when the tea is ready. Knowing in my choice of selecting this type of glass tea pot to enjoy a cup of tea, the process is a bit slower. For me this is good, as it does slow me down all the while creating a mental environment of personal calm. As well as taking my time in the selection of tea to enjoy for the moment at hand; Weather personal time or with a friend or two. The 16oz. is a good size for personal or with a friend or two. Choosing to purchase a few more to have on hand so a selection of tea can be enjoyed by all.

New Kaz Inc Kaz Airflow Systems Filter True Hepa Replacement Filter

What wasn't clear to me at all when purchasing this item is that I'd need two in order to properly replace my existing 17005 filter. Not cool at all. I bought a totally different filter today and I'm going to return this one if the new one is actually the right size.

Bionaire BAP815B-U Mini Tower Air Purifier

I've owned this Bionaire purifier for about 8 months and so far I have no complaints. This month the red check light went on which I assumed was to replace the filter. Filter replacement was very easy. Amazon sells the filters for $25 for a two pack which is a really good deal. I noticed nose stuffiness and allergy symptoms reduced within a month after I owned the product. It quickly removes smoke and other bad smells. I enjoy the 3 settings although I mostly use the medium and high settings. Some people are picky about noise but the medium setting is just a quiet hum and of course the high setting is a little louder but I find it useful for blocking out outside noise anyway. Overall, I think this is a good product for the price.

Husqvarna 125B 28cc 2-Stroke 170-MPH Gas-Powered Handheld Gas Blower

I previously owned an electric blower and then I had the Poulan Pro PPB300E that worked fine for the first couple of times I used it. Then for the next two years it was very hard to start, the engine would not run properly and had to keep it running mingling with the throttle and choke, and when it ran it did not seem to blow as it should have. Now it finally gave its ghost, the engine locked up. Since it was not worth fixing it, I went out and bought the Husqvarna 125B

I had a few surprises:

At the first touch I noticed how much lighter is than the Poulan. After mounting the air pipe and nozzle, although is so light, it feels "solid".

The starting rope can be pulled very easily. In fact so easy that at the first pull, I put my back into it and pulled so hard that I reached the end of the rope probably and the handle just flew out of my hand. I know... you're not supposed to do that, but it didn't seem to have hurt it.

It started at the third pull, which I think is great for a brand new motor.

Thereafter, I stopped and restarted as I was cleaning the yard several times, and every time it started at the first pull.

The air speed and the blowing pattern seem to be very good because the dirt blows away really fast, significantly faster than the other blowers I used.

I love the throttle being mounted on the handle as it gives you nice control over the air speed, especially when you are close to the finish and try to pile up the dirt. Also I love that it has a "cruise control" lever, which you can move to get the desired speed and then you don't have to hold the throttle, which is helpful on larger areas.

I see nothing wrong or that I would liked changed yet, so the only question remaining is how long it will last.

One note: I really do not see what is the difference between the 125B and 125Bx. The 125BVx is the same but comes with a vacuum kit.

______________________________

Follow-up note: August 5, 2011

I thought it may be worth noting that more than two year later the blower still works just as well as it did the first day.

No problem whatsoever, no maintainance of any kind, just filled the tank, done the work.

Although it doesn't start ALWAYS at the first pull anymore (when it's cold), the second or third (worst case) will do it. Still runs great and surely doesn't look its age.

When I'm going to need any other gardening tools, I will definitely stay with the Husqvarna brand.

Metro Vacuum MDV-3TA DataVac/3 Pro Series Toner Vac

We have had two of these devices over the years, and had the same problem with both... after awhile, the panel which covers the filter becomes very loose; the clips that hold it down just don't work well anymore, and the panel falls off every time we pick it up. I've tried various padding options to try to improve the mounting, but none really work very well. Next time around, I'll look for a better-quality brand (if I can find one).

Amico AP11000 11,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner

Works fantastic for my needs but before you purchase please read the following:

I use this unit in a 12x16 bedroom size for an office. I did install it in many areas of the house to see where it would function best in accordance with the specification. First, it is not for a living room where it opens up to the kitchen, hall, other rooms unless you only want cool air and only if the weather is in low 80 degrees or less. It won't cool like you want it to. It's just not made for that, and besides, the product description tells you 400 sq. ft. So my advice for you is to research before purchasing any portable air conditioner because every manufacturer will tell you the size of the room it will be coldest (I know, I own two other portable air conditioners, from other manufactures and they are dead on when they tell you the size of room their unit works best for cold air).

Second, you must follow the instructions that come with this unit (very simple) or else you are doomed and your unit will not work correctly. It does not tell you in the product description that you must leave at least 1.6 ft. (50cm) space all around the unit, but the instructions that come with it does. I wish I would have known this before I bought it because I almost didn't have the space required. If you don't follow this recommendation, it will run warm air; compressor cuts off every 10 minutes and fan blows warm--there are two vents on each side (right/left) and one in back that need that scope. I hooked it up for a day without the correct space and thought my unit was defective because it was always blowing out warm air, but after I shifted to the correct space needed it worked perfect.

All portable air conditions make noise and the 3 different ones I own make somewhat the similar sound. This one is a low humming which I find very soothing but for those of you, who can't bear the slightest sound, you will need to find an alternative solution other than a portable unit, because you won't find silence in a portable unit. The compressor is inside and doesn't hang outside like a window unit; so, you'll never be satisfied with any of this type of unit. I also read reviews from customers dissatisfied with the LED display lights for other similar air conditions. This unit does not have blaring LED lighting but there are display lights which are not that noticeable or bothersome.

The window adapter for the exhaust hose (circumference of hose is 19") is 52" long/tall so you can adjust it to whatever size you need for either horizontal or vertical use which seals the window nicely from outside elements and is very thin--3-1/2" wide. It comes with weather strips to insulate even further.

I purchased this unit because it is 1/3 smaller than other units; self evaporative system exhausts most of the condensate water minimizing the need to empty the internal bucket; it has a remote control; and it has a timer to set on or off. And to my pleasant surprise, it runs cold air to the point of freezing if you allow it to (but remember only in the allotted space recommended for). Another thing to keep in mind is that I ran this unit in 90 degree weather with very little humidity (west coast).

All in all, this unit meets my needs exceptionally well and the following are the desirable features:

1. very good air output; lots of volume and pressure

2. very cold output; even if you move it to a wide-open living room area; cool air is obtainable

3. easy to move around on the coasters that come on the unit

4. all the features that are mentioned on the product description are absolutely fabulous; and

5. this portable air conditioner is reasonably priced

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Oreck XL Forever Gold Vacuum

I did a lot of research to try to find a good vacuum for pets that was also quiet and light. The Oreck vacuums are more expensive than some of the others with good reviews, but Oreck was THE ONLY vacuum that came with a lifetime warranty. That says a lot. Combine that with the plentiful service stores and four years of free annual maintenance/checks and I think this vacuum is worth the price tag. So far, it does great on the pet hair, is incredibly easy to use and nearly vacuums the floors all by itself! With the numerous stores, this is the one item I would recommend buying in person rather than online. We got the same price, had 8 extra bags thrown in for free, and were able to take it home immediately with a 30 day trial/money back guarantee. I do not plan to take mine back after 30 days!
