I highly recommend this item with one caution.......please watch around pets and children. The packages hold little pellets that if the package is split open the pellets will be all over the floor. Winix PlasmaWave 5300 Air Cleaner Model

Did a lot of research looking at larger air purifiers. Winix is getting some good reviews at the allergy specialist / clean air sites.

I picked up one from Amazon to place in our living area around 20x15 foot area.

The unit surprised me very quiet, auto speed fan and odor detection which modulates the speed of the fan along with the plasma cleaning option (off or on).

The unit will take the Winix 9000 series filter which is five stages also a big plus.

The unit is super quiet on low to medium speeds and moves a lot of air. Turbo mode moves a ton of air and naturally is more noticeable noise wise.

Great unit quality built a true winner in my book. I liked this unit so much after the first week I purchased another for the formal living area.

Just a quick Update...

Going on five months now both of the 5300's are performing perfectly with no problems at all. I decided to add a Rabbit Air 421A to the living area with the 5300 in comparison the Winix is rated higher on the CADR the third level on the Winix is equal to the 421A's turbo mode.

The Rabbit Air is quieter on the higher speeds but understanding it is not delivering the volume of the Winix.

I like the filter system of the 421A but one can order the five stage Winix 9000 filter for the 5300 when the time comes for filer replacement, the odor sensor seems a bit more sensitive on the 421A vs. the 5300.

The 421A also has a dust sensor along with the odor sensor both of these work very well on the unit.

I could not be happier with the Winix I paid $149.00 for the 5300 and $350.00 for the Rabbit Air 421A my humble opinion there is not a difference in quality of clean air coming from either unit.

You absolutely cannot go wrong with the 5300 one of those great finds!!!

Eureka SuctionSeal Pet Upright Vacuum

I'm giving this 5 stars for the time being because it works very well, but I know vacuums decline over time (so my rating could change). I just received this Eureka vacuum in the mail today, and it works miles better than my previous vacuum, a Bissell. I'd had the Bissell for only about 6 months, and it had already quit on me. I thoroughly cleaned and washed all the filters, and it still wasn't working well enough to pull the dog hair out of our new rug (black dog hair and a cream colored rug, so the hair shows badly). So, I decided to replace the Bissell with a higher quality vacuum (the old one was only about $60, this Eureka is 3x the price, although I bought it on sale for $141). I've only used it once, but I'm pleased so far. It pulled ALL the dog hair out of the rug, and it looked very clean for a few hours (until my dog laid down and shed all over the place again.) I'm also pleased with the pet tool hose attachment, which is the first time I've had a brush tool that was actually able to remove all the dog hair from the couch. I've had many vacuums in the past, and none of them were able to get the hair out of the couch very well, but this one surprisingly actually does. I also really like the design of the vacuum base, because it is very slender and actually slides under the couch. I've also never owned a vacuum before that did this...it would always be too big, and I would have to use the hose to get under the front edge of the couch, but I don't have to do that any more!

My only complaint at the time is that the hose is a little awkward. It stretches kind of like a slinky and looks really cool and modern, but it doesn't stretch easily enough and the vacuum kept falling over when I was trying to use the hose. It's a silly little problem, that I fixed by moving the vacuum closer, but it was awkward. It's also large and heavy, but that's okay because small, lightweight vacuums tend to not work very well.

ETA: I wanted to add that it really does create a nice "suction seal" for each floor setting. I vacuumed again today, and first did my high pile rug, so I set it on "high carpet", and did a very good job. I moved onto my low pile rug, forgetting at first to change the setting, and it wasn't working very well. I was confused, but then I remembered, and changed it all the way down to "low carpet" which allows the bottom of the vacuum to suction itself right to the carpet, and it works very well. This is a feature I haven't seen in a vacuum before.

2nd ETA: I read the only other review so far (by Jodi C) and I wanted to comment on her review, since she reviewed the vacuum quite poorly. Yes, it is quite heavy, but I see weight as good quality. I hate really light flimsy appliances and electronics. I feel like this vacuum is built to last, where as my previous vacuum, which was very lightweight, was not. About the cord placement, I think she missed the hook for the cord on the handle. You hook it up there, and then it won't get in your way. I don't know what she's talking about with her attachments not working, it comes with three attachments, and I've used all three just fine. Mine fit onto my hose. Maybe she didn't put it together right....

AllerAir 5000 Series DS Air Purifier

I bought this "Excellent/quiet (on Medium 24/7)" unit direct from a Fast talking company salesman in Canada (blah blah blah, and lied about giving it a 10yr warranty vs 5yr! Grrr!)-

Shipped the same day, but It sat in customs for 10 days (normal, and cheaper from USA/ free S&H too). They also tacked on a Big S&H charge!

22lb Carbon filter lasted 2yrs with only one smoker in house (pack a day)I started smelling smoke, and replaced it.

BestAir A12W Aprilaire 12 Paper Wick Waterpad

I chose this item as a less expensive substitute for the Apilaire water pad. After using it for a few weeks, I ntoiced a puddle of water on the floor around the furnace. After opening the furnace, I found about a half-inch of water at the bottom of the air return duct and some water inside the furnace. I removed the water pad from the humidifer and noticed that there was about a 1/2 inch gap between the top of the pad and the bottom of the water distribution tray. I don't remember whether it was like this when I first installed it ( I think that it was) or whether it may have shrunk or deformed after being wet for some time. In either event, because of the gap, if the air flow through the humidifer is strong enough, the air blows the water dripping off the bottom of the distribution tray directly into the air duct instead of allowing it to dtip onto the top of the pad. Through time, it accumulates at the bottom of the duct and eventually leaks into the furnace and onto the floor. This product is not suitable for use in an Aprilaire model 440 humidifer. Do not buy it. Spend a few dollars more and buy the Aprilaire replacement pad which is a stiffer material instead of this paper-like material and does not have a gap between the top of the pad and the bottom of the distribution tray.

I searched for the best water purification technique available primarily because I was shocked at the state of our drinking water and I couldn't just go on blindly dumping chemicals into my body. My criterion was to remove all added chemicals from my drinking water including Fluoride and as an Engineer with a scientific background I needed scientific backing.

Note: The usage of Fluoride in our water systems is controversial, but Ninety-seven percent of western Europe has eliminated fluoride from drinking water. goggle "Fluorosis" and "fluoride side effects", read the article on "about dot com" on "fluoride removal". Read the article on "livestrong dot com" on "side effects of fluoride ingestion". I quote, "Fluoride ingestion has been associated with adverse health effects such as IQ deficits in children, depression, weight gain and heart disease. The "Journal of Applied Clinical Pediatrics" reports that "high fluoride intake has a damaging effect on intellectual ability," and human studies from China, India, Iran and Mexico found that elevated levels of fluoride in children resulted in reduced performance and impaired development of intelligence. The U.S. National Research Council has also found that fluoride affects normal endocrine function, which may contribute to hypothyroidism, or reduced activity of the thyroid gland. Hypothyroidism can lead to fatigue, depression, weight gain, hair loss, muscle pains and heart disease.

I started off with on a friends recommendation the Nikken Pi-Mag which i soon rejected because they independent lab results were not available, fluorine was not removed from the water and I could not trust a MLM companies claims' that were not scientifically verifiable.

I looked at Aquasana and Multipure's product line but I became obvious that the life expectancy was about a year and I would deal with leaks, and defective housing. The reviews for the New Wave were 10Stage Filter were promising on amazon and I bought it right away, but soon grew suspicious of their claims as there were no results posted on their website either. I called New Wave customer service which I must add was great and friendly and asked for the independent lab results, which they emailed. After analyzing the results I was disappointed to see that a company that makes water filters provided results from a lab called, Truesdale lab but back in 1995 (15yrs ago!). Surely they can get this tested recently since both regulations and water quality have changed since then and made this readily available to their customers via their website. Anyway the results they provided showed that it was tested for Cyst Removal (based on the 1988 NSF standard), Lead, Choloform and Lindane removal. Fluorine was not removed which for me was not good enough.

I returned the New Wave Environ and finally found the Berkey filter system which has an additinal fluoride filter as well. Although more expensive (about 250 inclusive of a set of flouride filters), the Berkey filters would be cheaper in the long run as they last between 3,400 gallons to 19,500 gallons depending on water quality, unlike the New Wave Filter's 1500 gallons. Furthermore I liked openness and readily accessible lab results by independent labs such as the University of Arizona, LSU and Spectrum labs (google Berkey lab results). Furthermore they are used by emergency organizations like the Redcross and Unicef.

I must add that there is no perfect system, the fluoride filters usually use an activated alumina filter media and Aluminia has been associated with Alzheimers. I was concerned about any aluminum dust residue left in the water and a little more research revealed the residue to me negligible.

Here is a comparison:

Water boiled in an Aluminium pan for 5mins had: 2.791 ppm aluminum

Colgate toothpaste: 52.878 ppm aluminum.

The Berkey flouride filter after 10 cycles had .037 ppm aluminum and after 20 Cycles: .029 ppm aluminum which in my opinion was negligible and safe.

Emer USA Compacto Canister Vacuum Cleaner

Finding the right vacuum has made me feel a lot like Goldilocks. I have hardwood floors with fringed area rugs. I also have two cats, a child, and lupus, which comes with arthritis all the time, chronic fatigue and pain, and a clog every vacuum known to man case of hair fall out every time I get a flare.

I have a Roomba, which I love, but between my hair fall and the fringe on my rugs, I spend a lot of time responding to "uh-oh, Beep Beep!" and often have to take the thing apart with a screwdriver to unwrap my hair from its brushes. Did I mention that it hates the fringe on my rugs? Love it otherwise, though, even if it takes two hours to do the house.

I have a 12 year old Fantom Fury bagless, which sucks the nap right out of my rugs no kidding. It, too, can be brought to its knees by my hair. The above-the-floor cleaning wand is too short. The thing weighs a ton. It's not great on the floors (it rumbles so hard that the dirt runs away), and it's hard to get around and under furniture and into corners.

I have a little bagless Shark thing, which is pretty good on the floors, but it doesn't get under furniture and does nothing on the rugs. It does well at above-the-ground cleaning, but you have to lift the whole vacuum to reach anything.

My Emer Compacto does everything I need it to do, and it takes me very little time to vacuum the whole house top to bottom. The canister itself is not super light, but I do not need to lift it except to take it out of the utility closet or take it halfway down the stairs. The cord is nice and long, and the wheels roll along very easily. The telescoping wand easily reaches the corners of my relatively high (old victorian house) ceilings, and the floor / carpet head is engineered to go right under beds, couches, whatever kind of furniture you'd rather not move. I was dubious about the lack of a powered brush head, but the floor / carpet head gets my rugs very clean with no need to stop and untangle brushes.

The air filter works well enough that I don't need to dust after vacuuming. And the motor is very quiet for a vacuum.

The only thing I wish is that it had more tools. It comes with the floor / carpet head and a crevice tool. Something for upholstery would have been nice. I absolutely would buy this again, though.

Eureka AirExcel Compact NLS Canister Vacuum

I bought this vacuum to make cleaning my laminate floors a little easier with dog hair, crumbs,outside dirt, grass, etc. So far it has delivered and more in making it a breeze to go through the house compared to my upright Eureka I had been using for a few years now. This is my first canister vacuum, it definitely is compact,the bin is small where the dirt goes, but my house isn't that huge and I would think anyone who vacuums often enough to not fill up the canister in one use would want to clean it out after using it each time. Emptying the dirt is so simple, unhook it from the base, go over to the trashcan, unsnap the bottom and the dirt falls right into your trashcan.

Biggest Pro to this little device is the suction, I was shocked at how much suction it had. If I vacuum over a area rug it sticks fast and if you push it to clean on the rug it picks up the rug, I managed a way to get it to not suck fast, but on my laminate floors, it glides nicely sucks up everything in it's path. It's fairly quiet as well compared to my upright. Another pro is the retractable electric cord, instead of wrapping it around those hooks, you push one button and it rewinds back into the machine. This vacuum is also lightweight. One con to the canister is the cover of the filter in the one wheel, it does fall off sometimes causing the filter to fall out. Another would be no place to hook the attachments to the canister and the hose is pretty long, kind of hard to store.

Overall, if you don't want to pay for a Dyson canister, this is a great alternative.

FAPF01/FAPF02 3M Filtrete Aftermarket Replacement Filter

This product is about the same as a CHEAP furnace filter that you could purchase from Home Depot or Lowes for much less. If you're like me you purchased your Filtrete Air Purifier for almost HEPA properties. Make sure that when you order, you order Genuine 3M replacement and not "Aftermarket"...if you do order this aftermarket product, you will not be satisfied as it only has maybe 25% to 30% of the filter media as the 3M.

Hoover WindTunnel 3 Upright Vacuum

I'm on my second Hoover as of two days ago... first one is still operational after 20 years... but I wanted some upgrades. My greatest desire..? I wanted to be released from the vac bag. But even though that has been accomplished... I'm(we're) still not free from some vac maintenance chores... and the occasional filter purchase. One step forward, two steps back maybe?

First, some perspective. A bagless vacuum is nothing more than a

glorified and highly stylized shop vac. All this crap about "wind tunnel and "cyclonic technology" and other such buzz word descriptors accompanied by dubious conceptual design claims, is just a bunch of advertising hooey meant to distract any buyer from a problem that is NOT preventable in any vacuum.. eventual loss of suction. If this isn't true you wouldn't find elaborate instructions with every model imploring you to clean filters frequently and to empty the dust cup often. If they don't get cleaned in the prescribed manner... loss of suction occurs... or complete plug-ups. So much for the "no loss of suction" claim. Most models have either mechanical or electric flow indicators that tell you exactly what isn't supposed to happen, is happening: loss of suction. So, with this in mind... it becomes a quest to find that vac that has enough obstacles built-in to the vac canister that will delay the loss of suction for as long as possible. That's the reason why the canister(most) is so jacked-up with multiple tubes, fins, screens and irregular shapes... to catch or divert the misc vacuumed up garbage away from the foam filter, and eventually the hepa filter. Things that a certain percentage of dust always manages to evade on its trip to the first filter. Shop vacs are bagless and will plug up sooner or later and so will house bagless vacs.. depending on what it is you're sucking up. They're designed on the same principles. If you can get past the claimed "no loss of suction" baloney... you can make a more informed decision.

Observations on my purchase. I forked over 153 smackers for the Hoover "Windtunnel 3 Pro Whole House" vac. This came after reading a couple of hundred reviews on Amazon of all the leading bagless vacs out there... and on what my vac needs really are. I'm not a compulsive vacuumer... just occasionally... and I have a small two bedroom house. After vacuuming almost the whole house for the first time this is what I noticed: I emptied the dust cup twice, so what? Just means there was plenty to get up... and there was. I don't think it picks anymore than my old bagged Hoover. How do I know? Because with the bagged I would occasionally run out of the bags... and I would reuse the old one... by unfolding one end of it, shaking it out, folding it back up and then stapling. Works well. I saw that same nastiness come out of the bag that comes out of the dust cup.

Next, the dust cup empties easily, hinged bottom opens up. But even after emptying and tapping on the dust cup canister to loosen all that didn't release right away... there was still plenty of fine dust stuck to the innards of that windtunnel canister. All the canister obstacles did their job; dust was either captured or stuck to them, and you can't shake it out. This fine dust sticks because of the moisture in it and that static electrical charge on the surface of the objects in the canister and the interior walls of the canister itself. The book recommends washing out the canister... I just took it outside of the garage and blew it out with an air hose. Faster and easier. And a bunch of that really fine dust went flyin'.

Next: I inspected the second to the last line of defense; the foam filter at the top of the canister. I was impressed, because only minimal dust reached that filter... I know this because I blew it out with air as well. The instructions say to wash this and let it air dry for 48hrs... ridiculous and boring. Use air.

Next: I inspected the Hepa filter... the last defense before the exhaust exits the vacuum. I detected no dust. Most impressive. And because no dust exits the vacuum... you don't get the vacuum cleaner stink in the room air... something I always get from the way less filtered bagged Hoover.

Overall observations: Here are the things that I dig; the bare floor agitator shut off, both when you set the vac to upright position and the foot button that shuts it off. The cleaning accessories, they all worked well... the stretchy hose, which was quite adequate... the headlight, the sturdy wheels that also have a soft surface for hard surface traction, the easy release of the cyclonic canister and dust cup... the most excellent suction and the overall sturdiness of the unit. And, the auto cord rewind is a kick and a hoot, but this feature really doesn't get you out of anything; you're either bending over to wind the cord up(no auto rewind) or bending over to pull the cord out(auto rewind). By comparison, this unit is supposedly on the heavy side, but I didn't notice... as long as the surface height adjustment is in the right place... it glided over everything I've got. It's been my experience in life that the heavier something is, usually means it's made of more durable materials and in copious quantities... something to keep in mind even when it comes to vacuums. Another bonus is that it's only half as noisy as the old Hoover. Best of all, no vacuum stink in the room air when you're done. Just so you know... I'm big on good design and construction... when I went to look at the vacs I checked out all the leading machines and passed many by because of shabby design and obvious weaknesses. This unit passed all my pickiness. As far as complaints go... for what I paid and how it performs and how well it's made... I have none. A year or two from now... I might have something to offer up here... I'll let you know. In the mean time... Hoover and I will leave the light on for yah. ;-)

Essick Air HD1407 Whole-House Humidifier

I purchased this last year and it worked fine once I figured it out. At first it would shut off after the first of the two tanks emptied. I thought it was broke. However, the trick is that it needs to be leveled out just right such that second tank can kick in after the first tank is empty. This took some experimenting with shims under the left side front wheel. It's an interesting design. The two tanks are offset such that the right side tank always empties first. But, if the unit is not leveled correctly the second tank will never drain. Actually, even if this is the case it will still "work", you'll just find you are constantly filling the first tank.

BIONAIRE 711D - Air Purifier Filter

Sharp AF-Q80RX, 8000 BTU Window Air Conditioner Unit

This AC does everything well. I have a very hot 200 square ft bedroom on the top floor of a 6 story apt building. I originally purchased 2 weeks earlier a Fredrich CP08F10 (7800 btu) which was not cool or quiet enough. (Stay away Friedrich is not what they used to be. ) This unit is very up to the task at keeping the room cool and even more important moisture removal. It does make some noise, but it is more a wind noise than a mechanical noise. I't is not easy to hear when the compressor switches on or off. Installation was easy.I took a chance with this as I could not find any reviews for this model, I took the advice of a trusted salesperson,and felt that I should write my own review. This is my first Sharp product. I would recommend this to a friend.

The locking tabs of these filters are dimensionally incorrect. The "lip" on the Locking Tab is shorter than on the O.E.M. filter, thus the filter does not properly lock in place in the Dirt Bin. Hoover WindTunnel Upright Type Y Vacuum Bags Microfiltration

I just received these bags, but the brand was NOT Envirocare as advertised -it was Crucial Vacuum, a cheap Chinese knock-off (of a generic!). I've been having this problem with vacuum parts through Amazon where vendors ship out much cheaper, inferior parts than what's pictured and hope that most people don't complain. Amazon is not doing an adequate job of keeping tabs on these vendors, and they are making a mint off of these cheap, inferior bags.

I e-mailed the vendor to complain and they are sending out the correct brand, but really, why should I have to do that? If this happens to you, please complain to Amazon as well -it's their responsibility to screen out vendors, especially when they rotate vendors through as the primary supplier (so feedback left for one may be attributed to another).
