Whynter Activated Carbon Replacement Filter

This arrived on time. Bought it in Amazon's "super-saver shipper" deal,

in other words bought a few other items to make it qualify and saved on

shipping. This was great.

This fit in my Whynter ARC-14S 1400 btu dual duct portable AC.

There are tiny gaps at the edges that worry me a bit, but i don't think

that is probably avoidable with this replacement carbon filters, as they

even have a porosity throughout, as part of their structure, which

represents equivalent space, or gaps through which air flows somewhat

unfiltered.

I have zero idea how much a carbon filter of this type actually accomplishes,

and would love to know. i have a $500 air purifier in which is around ten pounds

of actual activated carbon, which i have to replace every year or so, and that air

filter is "convincing". but this Whynter product is an AIR CONDITIONER not

an air filter, so i guess having the added little carbon filter cannot hurt.

if anybody knows more about how much these filters really do, if anything,

i hope they post here.

18x20x1-MERV 12 A/C Furnace Air Filters by Nordic Pure

I am very pleased with the filters, and with the service provided by the supplier. I will be ordering them again from Nordic Pure when I run low. They are MERV 12 which, since my baby granddaughter has just been diagnosed with asthma, was my primary reason for changing brands.

Honeywell Long-Life Pure HEPA QuietCare Air Purifier

As someone who is highly allergic to cigarette smoke and other air pollutants and irritants, I purchased a round Honeywell HEPA air filter when it first came on the market several years ago. It still works well in the living room, but it is quite noisy even on its lowest setting.

This year I purchased another Honeywell air cleaner with a HEPA filter (Model 17400) for my bedroom because I had contacted bacterial pneumonia last year and wanted to make sure I did not get it again. Next, I purchased this Honeywell 17000 Air Cleaner (with HEPA filter) for use in a smaller bedroom which has been turned into a home office and library.

These air cleaners really work! This winter I have not had a cold or flu. Also, this Honeywell Air Cleaner with HEPA filter is whisper soft, and I have had no problems with sleeping, working, reading, watching tv, or listening to music when it is running on the low and medium settings. I leave it on all the time, and I've found that it cleans the air best when the door is closed.

It has a convenient handle on the top, so I can move it to another room quite easily. Also, it is light enough that I can take it with me in the car if I want to use it away from home.

The prefilters last about 3-6 months, (and they can be vacuumed often if you have pets who shed). I change my HEPA filter every year, but you can wait 3 years to do so. These filters are easy to change. The Model 17000 is for a smaller room, and the Model 17400 is for a larger space.

Highly recommended for anyone who has pets, who lives with or entertains people who smoke, and who is allergic to dust, molds, or pollens.

Black & Decker HEPAFreshTM Air Cleaner BXAP148 3 Speed HEPA Purifier

I've been using this air cleaner for a couple days now to see how well it does its job. We have a great deal of Juniper pollen in the air at the moment and it's causing quite a bit of distress to everyone's system. It is suggested that this air filter is put in a small, single, closed room up to 155 square feet for best results. I am using it in my computer room as this fits the mode. I've been experiencing less pollen disturbances in this room than any other room in my house so I can recommend this machine for that purpose alone; it's doing a pretty good job of removing the airborne pollen and depositing it in the filter.

I am particularly happy with the machine itself as it seems very user friendly and if I didn't read the directions, I could still easily figure out the filter layers and how it works. The filter access cover comes off without a hitch and the filters are also easily removed for cleaning. The control panel is self explanatory, the machine has a built in carrying handle and it stands upright without tipping over. I am happy that the stand is included/molded into the design of the tower just as the handle is because screwing a bottom stand on tower appliances can be a bit tricky. No problems here, it just comes out of the box ready to roll. I like it.

Cinnamon Filter Breeze

We have a high-efficiency furnace that we spray this on the filters for. For a day or two, they make the house smell great! However, after, at most, 2-3 days, if you want the house to keep smelling great, you have to go back down and spray more on it. And we're talking @8 pumps of the spray each time. YMMV.

Lennox X6661 HCC20-28 Healthy Climate HC16 Cabinet

Easy to install and so much better than the Trane CleanEffects we had installed. Our home is less than 8 years old, however we needed an air cleaner especially with my allergies. Hands down, LENNOX Healthy Climate will be installed anywhere we move. The quality is so excellent, I even had this unit installed in my parents home. They love it and their home simply feels fresh, while maintaining excellent air!

Brushtech B68C 10-Feet Long Dryer Vent Duct Cleaning Brush

When comparing this brush to the other kits sold on Amazon I appreciated the fact that there were no flimsy gadgets promising to get in every crevice of the dryer/vent. This is simply a brush and a good quality one at that. The only thing holding back a 5-star rating on this is the length of the snake. 10' was nowhere close to reaching all the way thru my dryer vent duct. I had to tape the handle to my fish tape and feed it thru the duct that way. After running it thru 3 times it was squeaky clean and my dryer does in fact dry the clothes faster reducing my energy consumption.

Frigidaire FRA052XT7 5,000-BTU Mini Window Air Conditioner

I spent quite a bit of time researching A/C before purchasing. We live in Oregon and it doesn't get too hot but there's a month or two in the summer where the heat and humidity get oppressive in the house. I wanted an inexpensive, small, window A/C to increase the comfort. I wanted something small enough that I can store it the other 10 months.

So, after much research I ordered this model. I was going to get the 6K BTU model with the electronic controls but I figured I would get something super cheap and if it didn't work I could use it as a single room cooler. Shipped free which makes this a pretty good deal. Arrived in about a week.

Installation was easy, following the instructions in the manual. I did have to install and remove the A/C about 3 times to get all the sealing right. In the box there's a lot of different thicknesses of foam and foam tape. There is no specific instructions about what to do with this, except the stuff for the top gap of the upper sash. So, I experimented with various combos to get a good seal. We have recent vinyl windows with screens but no storms so the unit basically dropped right in. However, there are some gaps around the bottom in this configuration. I stuffed these with the thickest foam that came with the unit. This did the trick but didn't look too great. Luckly I ordered extra foam tape as another reviewer recommended, and I used small pieces of that to caulk around it inside and outside, leaving the big foam inside. It actually looks pretty neat and professional. $4 well spent ;)

Anyway, the unit is installed in our main living room. We are in a 1940's box bungalow so this room is about half of the width and length of the house. The bedrooms and kitchen connect to it. With it on HI cool/Max(7) the entire house has been very cold and huge amounts of water have been pulled out. We will see how it performs in the upcoming week of 95+ temps. We keep a few $10 box fans around to circulate air so I can move the cold air around.

One thing is that I have heard mentioned on a few other models is that the fan catches water in the pan and spits it around. This is a feature and not a bug ;). The unit is designed to pitch backward slightly when properly mounted. Moisture removed from the room collects at the bottom. The fan blade is coated in rubber and it's designed to suck water up and spray it on the evaporator coils. This facilitates some precooling of the outside air. It drastically increases efficiency. I would not drill drain holes, as other people have mentioned.

Summary:

$100, and my house is cold AND quiet. You can't say much more. If it's not enough for the hottest day I might get one more and move them to the bedrooms. It's very quiet on low but I like white noise.. I hope it lasts, even if it doesn't I'd gladly pay another $100 in 2 years.

BlueAir 450E SmokeStop Air Purifier

We have an issue where our neighbor smokes and we can smell the smoke in our bedroom (apartment living). Looked at numerous reviews on air purifiers and finally decided on this one. I also looked at IQAir (too expensive, probably more than what we actually needed in terms of room size) and a few other brands rated highly on various websites, but ultimate picked this one since it was less offensive looking and I liked the auto sensing features.

Pros:

Has helped immensely with the smoke smell in our bedroom (~200 sq ft)

Less ugly than other air purifiers, although still looks like a giant computer tower

Quiet on setting 1 (like a computer humming softly), relatively quiet on setting 2, and setting 3 is way too loud for sleeping

Design allows you to place pretty much against wall instead of having this large obtrusive thing in the middle of the room.

Cons:

It's not small, I'm kind of glad we didn't get the 500 or 600 series even though they are only a few inches bigger in a couple dimension.

A little pricey compared to some other alternatives, but I tend to go for the peace of mind of better reviewed products

Lysol Disinfectant Spray

Like any other Lysol Disinfectant Spray, this disinfects and eliminates oders. The scent puts you in the mind of oranges. The scent does not linger and it is not overpowering. As long as Amazon has it for $4, it is priced right and is the same price I have seen in the typical dollar store. The only better Amazon bargain is the package of the 3 larger cans for $10.

BISSELL CleanView

I have an Oreck for which I paid almost $350.....I also have a shedding 80 pound English Bulldog. I had vacuumed the rugs/carpet and they still had a fine layer of dog hair over them which I could remove with a dog brush....that is a lot if work. I scanned the products available and came across this one for $80. I vacuumed the kitchen rugs with the Oreck and immediately did a follow up with the Bissell....I filled the Bissell cup ! The Oreck ( and the expensive bags )

is out. This is it for me and I could buy three more and still pay less than the Oreck.

Berkey Light with 2 Black Filters

I question where some of these reviewers got their information about performance tests. Check out .

On one of the tabs you'll find analysis results.

The FAQ page says: "There are simply too many varieties of pharmaceuticals that could end up in drinking water. By too many I mean it is impossible to test for them all. However, we do know from testing, that the purification process used by the Black Berkey elements remove more pollutants than any other system available on the market today." It also describes a test you can do by adding red food coloring to the water to be sure the filter is working. Any filter that will remove red food coloring has to be pretty effective.

Regarding the high TDS rate one reviewer mentions, the FAQ page says, "Berkey purification systems do not remove the beneficial minerals from the water but they do extract harmful heavy metals such as lead and mercury as well as sedimentary minerals such as iron oxide. Therefore, the TDS (total dissolved solids) reading will not typically change much unless there are a lot of heavy metals or sedimentary minerals in the source water."

About viruses, the FAQ page says: "Berkey is the original North American distributor for British Berkefeld, a company who makes the finest ceramic water filter available. These ceramic filters are excelent at removing harmful bacteria from sediment heavy, contaminated drinking water. It soon became clear to Berkey that a more powerful filter was needed, one that not only removed bacteria but was also in addition able to remove chemicals, viruses, heavy metals fertilizers and a long list of additional contaminants from your drinking water. After many years of research Berkey developed the Black Berkey purification element. This filter gives you all of the benifits of the ceramic filter with the added abilities mentioned above. Black Berkey purification element signifigantly raised the bar to a level that no other gravity flow water filters are curently able to attain."

These filters are used all over the world by aid agencies. You won't find any filter on the market that will purify better. Certainly not simple charcoal filters like Pur. On this page: it explains that a water filter has to remove 99.99% of pathogenic bacteria. To be sold as a "purifier" it has to remove 99.9999%. "All Berkey systems that contain the Black Berkey elements are classified as water purifiers. In fact Berkey Water Purifiers remove 99.9999999% (log 9 reduction) of pathogenic bacteria. To our knowledge no other water filtration device in the world can match that claim."

I have had a Big Berky for 2 months, due to a cancer diagnosis my treatment plan requires drinking pure water with no added fluoride and no residual agrotoxins, etc. The Berkey filters were the best solution I could find of anything on the market and we're loving the water and quick and easy system.

Metrokane Rabbit Wine Aerating Pourer

In these days of over-hyped products that rarely work as advertised, it's a treat to find something that actually does what it's supposed to do. Metrokane's Rabbit Wine Aerating Pourer is one that does, based on our family's experience. We've found it greatly improves the taste and drinkability of freshly opened red wines without having to decant them from the bottle, while at the same time being functional and easy to use. As an added bonus, clean up is a snap! We tried it out with members of our gourmet group and it garnered kudos from all concerned. Highly recommended!

Essick Air 697-500 Variable Speed Humidifier

I received this item just before Christmas 2009. Our house was so dry I was slowly pruning. At 1500 sq.ft. on the main floor with 9 foot ceilings it keeps us quite comfortable and does the job. Have been running it straight since early December and no mechanical problems. Be aware of the following:

LOOKS: This cabinet model looks better on the website than in person. It is a darker brown than shown (not as orange) but still a pleasing colour. It is made of plastic and has a woodgrain pattern, but doesn't quite live up to getting away with it, mostly because of the slightly warped top vent (yes, vents from top, cannot put stuff on top of here without blocking the ventilation). Ours comes out of the plastic hinge at the back and does not seat well in all grooves, but probably not noticeable to guests. It needs to sit with it's back against a wall, as the back of the unit is not covered by a nice woodgrain cover, although it is brown plastic. You also notice the black filter hooked on the outside back sucking "filtered" air into the unit. My favourite part is it's on four wheels, so it is very easy to move and vacuum around on my wood floors. Unless you have shag rug, it should also be fairly easy to move on a short pile rug.

CONTROLS: It has two dials "humidity control" and "variable airflow". The humidity control does not go by numbers (i.e. 50% 75%) so you don't really know the current level of your home; however it does allow you to set low / comfort zone / high arond the dial, and will toggle off when it reaches the desired humidity level set. We set ours 1/4 turn above the comfort zone and that works well. Note that setting it on high still doesn't peel your wallpaper, you can't even see the humidity coming out like you can on an ultrasonic BUT it does do the trick, as confirmed by the empty bottles I'm constantly refilling. The variable airflow dial goes from OFF/COMFORT ZONE (which starts immediately from off) to HIGH. This unit is LOUD!! When they say comfort zone they mean for your EARS. I only put it up to 12o'clock position (medium, I guess) when I'm out of the room, and any higher is just noisy with HIGH being like a battering ram. The comfort zone is best and since we situate it right by our kitchen/nook and living room we keep it low. (I know what you're thinking we have taken it apart and rechecked our setup, it is correct with nothing unusual accidentally left inside, no real reason it should be this loud. Only thing I can think of is plastic rumbling on four wheels with the echo of our hardwood floors maybe it won't be as much of an issue for you).

BOTTLES: There are two large 2.5 gallon bottles that rest on the left and right of inside cabinet. They are easy to fill and the unit comes with a tube to help you fill from your tap. Also comes with one small bottle of bacteriostatic additive to get you going. We use distilled water so we don't have the hard water build up in the bottom reservoir, you may want to use soft/distilled if you can get it or put an additive in to dissolve minerals. The bottles have handles on both top and bottom so when you turn them over to place them in it is easy to handle the weight. We don't spill any water when doing this and it's a great design. Also good are two "refill" lights that light up orange when each bottle is empty. They are easy to see through the grill on top as you're walking by, but not obtrusive. Very easy to refill while the other still is going, no need to turn unit off.

NOISE and PRICE: It's the only big drawback, and the price at $200 USD is steep for what it is. Would love to see real wood for that price, as there really isn't much to the unit but a small fan, filter, and plastic.

All in all, there aren't alot of different makes on the market to choose from, especially ones that don't look utilitarian. This will do what you're looking for but be aware if you have unusual dryness in your area and need to pump humidity with the control on HIGH, the noise from this baby will stop you from hearing your baby monitor and could keep you and baby up at night; otherwise, sleep soundly in the "Comfort Zone". Good luck with your purchase!

Sharp AF-Q80RX, 8000 BTU Window Air Conditioner Unit

This AC does everything well. I have a very hot 200 square ft bedroom on the top floor of a 6 story apt building. I originally purchased 2 weeks earlier a Fredrich CP08F10 (7800 btu) which was not cool or quiet enough. (Stay away Friedrich is not what they used to be. ) This unit is very up to the task at keeping the room cool and even more important moisture removal. It does make some noise, but it is more a wind noise than a mechanical noise. I't is not easy to hear when the compressor switches on or off. Installation was easy.I took a chance with this as I could not find any reviews for this model, I took the advice of a trusted salesperson, and felt that I should write my own review. This is my first Sharp product. I would recommend this to a friend.

Ultravation Model 91-005 Progressive Media Filter

After reading through the details of numerous replacement filters, all of which seem to not quite exactly fit in my system, I decided to go OEM to avoid any problems. I was shocked to discover the manufacturer's price, but was greatly relieved when I found this deal on Amazon. The filter arrived extremely fast (several days before advertised) and fits perfectly.

Pure Guardian H1500 Ultrasonic Midsize Manual Humidifier

Purchased this for our infant son. We desired both a warm and cool mist option and this allowed us to not purchase two products. The water tank is fairly large and only needs to be refilled once ever 3 days. We run this all night in his nursery so approx. 11 hours at a time. The unit is very quiet and it creates an excellent amount of humidity so much that we have to leave the door partially open or the room becomes steamy. It's a little pricy for a humidifier but we are pleased with the product. It also contains a night light which we do not use as it is too bright for our liking.

24x30x5 (23.75x29.75x4.38) MERV 10 Honeywell Grill Filter

Don;t really know if these filters work because I don't know how to tell that. However, the price was great (beat our local prices by 50%) and the service fast. Would highly recommend this purchase. The filters do grab tons of dog hair (and you can actually scoop out the dog hairwe have four dogs and a cat). They last much longer than the smaller filters and came with a great review from our local HVAC company that charged us twice this price for them.

I would recommend them and would highly recommend this source for purchases.
