  • The Aprilaire Auto Trac humidifier control is computer-equipped, completely automated and will never need manual adjustments.
  • The advanced computer technology measures the outdoor temperature and indoor humidity and continually adjusts your homes indoor humidity to its optimum level.

Had one of these units prematurely quit, not triggering the Aprilaire humidifier. Aprilaire technical reps were great assisting to determine the problem of the humidifier not working, which was the humidistat. Unfortunately, it was out of warranty, so had to purchase. Mechanical and electrical installation was simple. Worked at start-up, and has been doing fine since. Do hope it lasts longer than the last one, though. They are not cheap.

Puzhen PZ-UA08C Bamboo Essential Oil Ultrasonic Aroma Diffuser

I absolutely love this diffuser. Puzhen is a great brand. doTERRA (although they aren't my favorite essential oil company) are the US exclusive distributors of the Puzhen Lotus diffuser. This diffuser is comparable to the Lotus as far as specifications are concerned, however, this diffuser, the Bamboo, actually has a larger water reservoir, which equals a larger running time. It's not cheaply made. It's actually a lot better than most diffusers. I highly recommend this product.

Amaircare XR-100 Portable Auto Air Purifier

I bought one of these tiny air purifiers in December, 2008, and I've used it many times for travel, and a couple of times in my house as backup when one of my larger air purifiers wasn't working fast enough to suit me when some kind of chemical smell was in the house. I am very sensitive to chemicals (AKA volatile organic compounds or VOC's), from pesticides to paint to cleansers like bleach and ammonia. This little machine is great at clearing them out of the air. It is also excellent for its intended purpose for clean air in your car during a commute where you are breathing in smog and car exhaust. I find it strong enough to purify the air in an entire motel room, which is what I primarily use it for since it is small enough that I can easily pack it in a carry-on suitcase.

I am in the process of buying another one of these air purifiers because just last night the little "male" prong inside the "outlet" on the machine where the "female" AC adapter plugs into the body of the machine broke off and fell inside the housing of the machine. The Amaircare XR-100 has a five-year limited warranty on the motor and fan--which were not broken on my machine--but not on this small crucial part, so the machine is kaput. This situation, however, did not aggravate me enough to not want to replace this air purifier, because I have come to strongly rely on its excellent work to keep the air clean when I travel.

Here are the specifications of this portable air purifier:

Square Foot Coverage: up to 300 cubic feet

Power Requirements: 110/115V AC, 12V DC

Delivered Air Flow: 20 cubic feet per minute

Dimensions: 8" Depth x 3.5" Height

Weight: 2.1 lbs.

Warranty: 5-year limited warranty on the motor and fan.

Energy Consumption: 4.5 watts with AC adapter. Note: This comes with an adapter that plugs into the cigarette lighter of your car. If you want an AC adapter that plugs into a wall outlet, that is sold separately and usually costs about $22-$35. I own another small air purifier by the same company, the Amaircare Roomaid Portable HEPA Air Cleaner, and its AC adapter is interchangeable with the one I got for this device.

This is a three-stage portable air-purification system:

Stage 1: Activated carbon captures large particulates and odors.

Stage 2: Electret charged media captures sub-micron particles such as dust, pollen, cigarette smoke, and bacteria.

Stage 3: Zeolite VOC filter removes toxic gases, fumes and odors.

This machine is easy to maintain. All it needs is periodic filter changes. However, the filters need to be changed every 4-6 months, depending on how much you use it. I only use mine to clean the air in motel rooms when traveling a few times per year, so I have never changed mine in the 3 years I owned it. I use a bit larger Amaircare air purifier in my car than this one, the Amaircare Roomaid Portable HEPA Air Cleaner I mentioned above.

Here are the positives of this air purifier for its its intended purpose of purifying the air in a small space:

1. It is constructed from steel with a finish that will not itself outgas toxic chemicals when in use.

2. The steel housing is attractive and durable.

3. It does a great job removing sub-micron particles without using a HEPA filter system, which would take up a lot more room and not be nearly as portable.

4. Its air flow is strong enough to provide 4-16 full air changes per hour depending on the size of the vehicle or motel room you are using it in.

5. It is easy to install and operate. In a car, attach it to the back of the headrest of your seat, or the headrest of the seat next to you, or simply set it on the floor of the car, and plug it into the cigarette lighter. In a motel room, use the electrical outlet AC adapter, plug it in and set it on a table or chair.

6. Though this has a 5-year warranty on the motor and fan, if a tiny part breaks as it did for me, you are out of luck. However, at the low price, even a few years of worth of use is an excellent return on your investment.

Here are the negatives of this air purifier for its intended usage:

1. Unlike larger air purifiers, no warning lights flash when the filters need to be replaced.

2. There is no on/off switch on this device. It runs as long as it is plugged in.

3. You need to take a little time and effort and use a screw driver to replace the filters, but you replace all three filters simultaneously, which simplifies the process.

4. You need to replace the filters every 4-6 months (approximately every 120-150 hours of use), and the average cost for replacement filters is about $35. Thus, rather like for printers, the real cost is in running the machine, not in the cost up front.

5. If you want to use this in a motel room or your office at work, you will need to buy a separate adapter for that purpose for a separate charge.

Hamilton Beach 04234 Long Life Air Cleaner Pet Odor Filter

These air filters work pretty well. We have a Hamilton Beach True Air cleaner in the room where we have our cat box. It works pretty well to keep the cat box odors under control. The filters have been a little hard to find though lately.

Honeywell HFD-100 Tower HEPA Air Purifier

This does a good job of cleaning the air. I breath better with it. That is the most important thing, right?

I bought two, *but my wife turns the one in the living room off when she gets up before dawn*. I have to remember to turn it back on. Low or high speed this thing can be heard. Low is not really any quieter, but probably less effective.

This is basically Honeywell's souped up answer to Ionic Breeze. Its noisy because the ionic cleaner is built around a tower fan and a new type of cleanable IFR filter is added. Its a much better value than the Ionic Breeze, Oreck and similar models. I just wish that it was quieter!!!!!

After one month, I saw some dust in the filter and cleaned it. These put out plenty of negative ions, which are great for chasing the blues away and making dust particles fall to the floor for you to vacuum them up. You will see the dust on the flour, rather than breath it into your lungs!

As long as you don't mind WHITE NOISE, this is better deal that oreck or ionic breeze in my opinion. Its half the price and tested to do a better job.

This one has a built in tower fan. A verticle squireel cage, if you will. If they could just make the darn thing less noisy it would be perfect!!!

Hoover Windtunnel Air Bagless Upright

I'll start this review by saying straight offI have two Dysons. I also have three birds, three cats, a six-year old child, a husband that telecommutes from home, a big garden, and a father that golfs on dusty courses and brings back a lot of sand and dirt, so our vacuums are put to work on a very regular basis. We vacuum several times a day.

The Hoover was actually a pleasant surprise. While it's not as powerful as the Dyson, it's not nearly as expensive.

Pros:

Suction is excellent. Gets up tons of cat hair, feathers, dirt, dust, litter, seed, etc.

Works great on rugs and bare floors. It's also really great at getting stuff up from the grout, which other vacuums can miss.

Very easy to empty.

Lightweight but not flimsy.

Easy to switch between modes.

Very few attachments to lose and deal with.

Not too noisy.

Long cord.

No bags.

The cons:

Doesn't navigate like the Dyson, but that's actually a pro in some ways. My mom has really bad arthritis in her hands and can't use the Dyson because of the way it navigates but she CAN use this. So for those with joint issuesthis can be a plus.

The hose assembly is a bit tricky. But that seems to be the case on ALL vacuumsone of our Dysons has a terrible hose assembly that requires way too much work to get the attachments on, so I think this might be another "across the board" issue.

As others have noted, sometimes pet hair can get wrapped around the cone inside the canister, and when you empty the vacuum you have to reach in and pull it out. Kinda gross.

All in all, it's a powerful vacuum. Not as powerful as the Dyson, but not as pricey or "fussy", either. I definitely recommend it for those who don't want or need a Dyson but want something powerful and easy to use and empty.

Berkey BK4X4-BB Big Berkey Stainless Steel Water Filtration System

This Berkey filtration system actually arrives with only 2 filters rather than the advertised 4 filters. This is significant due to the cost of the filters, but the system works fine with the 2 filters provided....the system would simply cycle water faster with 4 filters. Amazon fairly reimbursed us for the 2 missing filters, so I have no issue with where we ended up, but they should either change the product description or ensure that the product is shipped as advertised with 4 filters. From reading other reviews our experience was not isolated.

We are very pleased with the quality of water provided by the Big Berkey filtration system and would not hestitate to recommend it. Our local water is heavily chlorinated and the Big Berkey produces great tasting water from tap water that we did not drink before.

So, if you order the Big Berkey advertised with 4 filters be aware your system may well arrive with only 2 filters, but the system is great and functions very well.

16x20x4-MERV 12 A/C Furnace Air Filters by Nordic Pure

These filters were purchased in lieu of inoperable cells in an electronic air cleaner. These worked great, but required pretty frequent changes. Probably not the fault of the filter: our house is under a huge tree and we have two basset hounds.

iRobot Roomba 4210 Discovery Vacuuming Robot

I've been a Roomba user for almost two years, so I know the benefits of a little automated vacuum. However we had three primary complaints that iRobot has addressed in this new version:

1. Inconvenience of coming home to a dead battery

2. Difficult to clean

3. Noisy

4. Could not focus on dirtier areas; only cleaned randomly.

1. We have gotten into the habit of, as we are walking out the door, putting the Roomba to work. However, we always used to have the problem of coming home to Roomba with a dead battery (inevitably it would die in the worst spots, like under our bed just out of reach). Then we would have to plug him in to our charger (which we had to shell out sixty bucks for) and wait for two hours to use him again. That was complaint one for the old version.

iRobot has fixed the battery issue on the Discovery. The fast charger (which we had to pay for before) is now built in. Secondly, and what has proven to be my favorite new feature of the new Roomba, the little vacuum automatically finds his docking station when his battery is about dead. I do have two recommendations on this note, however. The docking station appears to work just like a virtual wall, Roomba doesn't know that it is there unless it crosses its path, so you make sure that it is in a wide open room where Roomba is sure to cross its path in its waning minutes of power. Secondly, now you have to be extra sure to Roomba-proof the room so that he doesn't get stuck. If he's stuck he won't be able to find his way back to the charger.

2. The new version has gotten much easier to clean, especially the main brush. All the pieces now pop in and out of place easier and there are no screws to remove any of the pieces that need cleaning. This has proven to be a huge benefit.

3. The Discovery is noticeably quieter than the older versions, especially on tile surfaces.

4. The new line of Roomba Floorvacs comes with sensors that can detect dirt. That was the first thing we tested when we got our Discovery. I had pieces of Styrofoam broken into small pieces and it detected it and automatically performed a spot clean on that area. Then I put him in the kitchen where I had accidentally dumped a bag of cereal on the floor and then managed to step on it...Roomba focused on that area and cleaned up every little crumb.

I love my Roomba. I 100% recommend that you get one. I bought mine at a local store in the mall and had to return my Pro Elite version 4 times before I finally got one that wasn't buggy. Then, under the warrantee, after my fourth one went on the fritz I was able to upgrade to the Discovery for free. So far after 2 weeks, the Discovery has been bug-free.

Nevertheless, because of the many issues that I have had in the past, and as with any new and emerging technology, buy it where you can purchase an extended warrantee and easily return defective devices.

Notwithstanding, buy a Roomba. Even though my wife and I never have time to clean our floors have been spotless for the last two years.

I hope this helps.

Oransi Replacement Pre

I have had my Oransi since the first of December and run it 24/7. The stuff this filter pulls out of my air is just amazing. I have two cats and a dog and I clean the pre-filter every week because it needs to be cleaned every week. When I think that I was breathing all of that before I bought the filter Yike! The down side is my experience thus far is the costly filters do not last a year. After 4 1/2 months of continuous use (and why would you use an air filter intermittently?), I am getting a 'check filter' light and the filter does look like it needs to be replaced.

Filter Stream AirTamer Ionic Travel Air Purifier

I have many ionizers, also a couple of different wearable ones. I also have a professional ion counter to actually measure the output.

All the other wearable ionizers use a needle to emit the ions. Those models all have 3 disadvantages: They emit ozone (I want ions, not ozone), the ion stream is very focussed at one point (almost like a laser pointer or a highly focused flashlight) and the emitting needles wear out rather quickly.

This unit uses a tiny carbon fiber brush instead of a needle. I can measure a surprisingly high ion output 180 degrees in all directions around the brush (no focused beam). I am sure that it encloses my whole head much better that the focused beam of other devices hitting my chin. No ozone to detect. Brush should keep a very long time. 2x CR2025 batteries keep it running for a surprisingly long time (longer than any other battery operated ionizer I own) and if you buy them online at the right place, they are really cheap (although this is not rally an environmentally friendly solution).

Disadvantage: It's a but heavy and looks weird. I wish they would make a model that looks more like a piece of jewelry (but unisex, please) or an amulet. I really don't like if people stare at the "thing" around neck, but I can live with it.

Currently I experience some kind of allergic reaction on the skin on my chest right under the unit (with the unit on top of a t-shirt, of cause). Not sure about that. Will watch it...

27x27x1 (26.5 x 26.5) Accumulair Platinum 1-Inch Filter

I am not sure how other filters may work, but what I can say is that I have bad allergies, and when I am in my home running the central air it is as though I have no allergies at all.

I have purchased this product through Amazon/FiltersNow twice, and both experiences were positive.

Kalorik 10-Cup Programmable Coffee Maker

Materials and construction seem very cheap. The spring in the part that allows you to take the pot out while still brewing, fell out while I was unpacking it. I returned it and purchased a Zoji. I am pleased with that coffee maker.

8,000 BTU Window Air Conditioner

It works great but putting it together was a pain in the ass, I couldn't get the accordion like extensions to stay onto the air conditioner which you have to do to seal it completely into the window and the picture on the instructions that shows you how to do it is not clearly printed so you cant make out your ass from your elbow looking at it, finally I figured it out the hard way and got it together.

Surround Air Multi-Tech Air Purifier

Has everything I want. cautionthey sent it in its own product box.

Comments: Fan pushes lots of air so its not that quiet. Great, large UV light but its so powerful that it glows through all sides still safe I think. Good at getting rid of chemical smells. Blue control light is bright but turns off quickly perhaps too quick for some. I've had good luck with most products from this company though they are a bit fragile.

Church & Dwight Co.,Inc. Arm And Hammer Fridge Fresh

Cost is roughly 2-3 times that of the standard 1 lb box. The 1 lb fridge and freezer version, the one with the sides that come off for more exposure to the soda, is advertised to last 90 days or so. I thought that the pink indicator would be nice since I tend to forget to replace the 1 lb box, particularly because it inevitably ends up in the far back recesses of the fridge. This fridge fresh pack conveniently hangs right by the door with a suction cup so I see it easily, but after 1 month I've noticed the indicator says its time to change it already. Although the concept is neat and convenient, I'm not sure if I'll buy it again due to the apparent short product life.

pureguardian H2500 100-Hour Ultrasonic Humidifier

Love everything about the way this Humidifier works. Very fine mist. Extremely quiet. If I were to change anything about this humidifier, it would have a way to fill the water chamber from the top. It is a little bit of a pain to have to take the tank off, turn it upside down before getting it too far away from the unit so you don't drip water all over the floor or furniture, find a sink deep enough to be able to fill it to the top, then haul the now heavy reservoir back to the base unit, then flipping it back over the unit to install back on the base. It would be so much easier to have a top fill and just bring the pitcher of water to the unit.

Dirt Devil UD40285 Featherlite Bagless Upright

Is it too much to ask for a vacuum to pick up stray pieces of paper, not to spit dirt out the back, and be light? This one fits the bill. I owned a dirt devil featherlite 9 years ago but after my husband touched it after 8 years, it didn't suck much anymore. Up till then it worked great. So I bought a vacuum that cost triple this vacuum thinking more expensive so it should be a wonderful vacuum. NOT! It didn't work well at all. Wouldn't pick up papers and kept shredding paper over the carpet, wouldn't suck it up. It also kept spitting dirt out the back on hard floors, or at least every direction except up the canister. I had a herniated disc for 10 months, every time I used the expensive vacuum, it was so heavy and bulky it kept throwing my back out more and kept me down for a week in pain. I was so happy to see kohl's had the new improved version of my old featherlite. It works as good if not better than the last one I had. It sucks really well. I have fun watching the dirt starting to move toward the vacuum before I even get to it. No spitting out the back at all! It is really lightweight but not as wide as other vacuums. The air coming out blows up so items on the refrigerator get blown off sometimes. I don't mind. This is perfect for my 1400 sq foot house and my back is thanking me. Even if I had a larger house, I wouldn't hesitate to use this one. It may take me a few minutes longer but is so worth it. This one even fits nicely in my small coat closet, unlike the more expensive vacuum. I had to force, pull and tug it in. Needless to say the bulky expensive vacuum is gone for good! Just because a vacuum costs more, doesn't mean it's better! I highly recommend this product!
