Ok,

These Ionic purifiers do work; however, mine stopped working after a year and here's what the Tech Support representative told me over the phone:

Rep: "Sir, how long have you owned the twin purifiers?"

Me: "about a year and a few months now."

Rep: "What is the problem?"

Me: "A RED light comes on right after I turn them on but the metal filters are clean!" Note: red light means filters must be cleaned.

Rep: "Ok, sir. What you need to do is send them both in and we'll replace them"

Me: "How much will this cost me?"

Rep: "$50 for you to send them and another $30-$50 for us to send them back"

Me: "What is the reason why they BOTH stopped working?"

Rep: "Well, after 1 year, use or no use, the wires inside the purifiers die and need replacing"

Me: "So, every year or so I must spend another $100 to get these working again?!!!"

Rep: "Yes, Sir. That's correct."

Me: "Ok. Well forget it. I will go on and give my review on these items right now."

As these Ionic purifiers seem to do a good job cleaning the air "without the consumer having to keep buying filters", the truth is that you must continue buying them every year for $100. According to the rep they give you news ones; they do not fix them or replace the dead wires.

I, for one, will not purchase this brand again. I do not hold a grudge against the people who sold them to me or the makers, but you as a consumer who wants things to last and work properly, beware of this twitch/deffect/malfunction or whatever you may want to label it.

Do your research for a real good filter. I am off to that search right now.

I'll start this review by saying straight offI have two Dysons. I also have three birds, three cats, a six-year old child, a husband that telecommutes from home, a big garden, and a father that golfs on dusty courses and brings back a lot of sand and dirt, so our vacuums are put to work on a very regular basis. We vacuum several times a day.

The Hoover was actually a pleasant surprise. While it's not as powerful as the Dyson, it's not nearly as expensive.

Pros:

Suction is excellent. Gets up tons of cat hair, feathers, dirt, dust, litter, seed, etc.

Works great on rugs and bare floors. It's also really great at getting stuff up from the grout, which other vacuums can miss.

Very easy to empty.

Lightweight but not flimsy.

Easy to switch between modes.

Very few attachments to lose and deal with.

Not too noisy.

Long cord.

No bags.

The cons:

Doesn't navigate like the Dyson, but that's actually a pro in some ways. My mom has really bad arthritis in her hands and can't use the Dyson because of the way it navigates but she CAN use this. So for those with joint issuesthis can be a plus.

The hose assembly is a bit tricky. But that seems to be the case on ALL vacuumsone of our Dysons has a terrible hose assembly that requires way too much work to get the attachments on, so I think this might be another "across the board" issue.

As others have noted, sometimes pet hair can get wrapped around the cone inside the canister, and when you empty the vacuum you have to reach in and pull it out. Kinda gross.

All in all, it's a powerful vacuum. Not as powerful as the Dyson, but not as pricey or "fussy", either. I definitely recommend it for those who don't want or need a Dyson but want something powerful and easy to use and empty.

Panasonic Jetturn Upright Vac

I was looking at getting the Dyson Ball, decided to try this one as it is less expensive. Glad I did. My G/F and I love this vacuum, easy to use, light weight. The stretch hose with the telescoping brush is great.

It takes about two minutes to get use to the swivel steering. Love the lay flat option. Now I do not have to move my California King Mattress and box springs to vacuum under the bed.

Easy to see when the canister is full and very easy to empty.

The retractable cord is an added benefit.

I was also surprised at how much quieter this vacuum is compared to others I have owned.

My only complaint is that I have to empty the canister more often as this vacuum has great suction and cleaning power.

Bionaire Cool Mist Humidifier

I bought this unit from Costco. At very beginning, I'm little concerned about this product, because there are not a lot of reviews @ amazon. And the only review I found said very badly about this product. But after I used it for couple weeks, I'm positive to say this is a great product. There's no wet path on the floor after I used it at all. (Not like the other review said.) It's very easy to pour water in. It's also nice that you actually have options to adjust the humidity level.

Dyson DC24 Ball All-Floors Upright Vacuum Cleaner

I bought the DC 24 to replace a small vacuum and was my first Dyson purchase (though I have used them regularly in the past). I would not recommend this vacuum to replace a dedicated large upright. Dyson uses "airwatts" to specify the power of the vacuums and the DC 24 has 115 airwatts vs. 220 airwatts for the DC 25 and DC 15. Not knowing how many airwatts other vacuums use, I can only guess similar comparisons to other brands.

What to Like

The DC 24 vacuum is lightweight 11.5lbs (DC25 16.1lbs and DC15 19.95lbs) and can go up and down stairs without problems (3 story condo). In fact, instead of using the hose attachment for the stairs I prefer to use the vacuum itself. It has a nicely placed handle in the front for this function (like a weed trimmer). You have to hold it out away from your body, as the brushes don't spin if the unit is placed upright.

Despite being lightweight and lower power, it has consistent suction and still get's a lot of dirt and dog hair out of the carpet.

The "Ball" allows the vacuum to access small, hard to reach areas without using the attachment. It is similar to using a swivel head on a mop. It handles my hardwood floors well, and now has replaced my sweeper.

The no-mess canister, easy to dump out with just a push of a button.

The washable hepa filter. This is one reason I do not have a problem with paying more for a Dyson. Effective heppa filtration requires regular replacement and that adds up in extra dollars. The dyson solves that with an easy clean filter.

5 year warranty. You will probably experience a disconcerting feeling when it's out of the box and it seems like flimsy construction. I usually destroy vacuums and so far this vacuum has held up well. I think the flimsy feeling comes from it's flexibility, the adjustment points and the ball. Trust me, I have dropped it a few times down a flight of stairs on the hardwood and it still looks and works as good a new.

Compact storage... that goes hand in hand with light weight, but it also telescopes down in height to fit under shelves for storage.

Coolest Dyson feature for me is the no-tool brushbar access/removal. Makes it very easy to remove obstructions from the brushbar without a tool set.

What not to Like

The attachment is difficult to convert, this is not unique to this Dyson model. Some cleaver engineer came up with a way to make this attachment compact and self contained, but impossible to convert the first 10-15 times you use it. Dyson does have more expensive models that have easier to use attachments. After using their products for awhile, I have become a Dyson attachment Jedi Master.

The hose for the attachments is short. It can't reach my 10' ceilings without lifting the base up off the floor. I recommend the Dyson's flexible attachment for dust and/or cobwebs.

The vacuum has trouble with large items (clumps of dog toy stuffing) that big vacuums normally don't hiccup on. It either doesn't have the brush head height or the plumbing for large items. It's not really a negative for me, as I learned early on to pick up big items that might destroy a perfectly working vacuum motor. I didn't have the same problem with using only the attachment.

Refresher Liquid Spray Fragrance

Talking about a subject that's not a very comfortable one is not easy, but I have to share. So here goes...This spray is AMAZING! One spritz in the bathroom, 5 minutes and the stinky smell they, or you, left behind is gone. This stuff should be called the miracle spray. It lasts us a long time since you need so very little. If you over do it then the fragrance is overwhelming and will make you cough. 1 spray and the stink is gone.

We LOVE it and take it anywhere we are going to stay overnight. Nothing more embarrassing than stinking up the bathroom you are a guest in. Or in your hotel room where you have no choice but to leave the door shut and trap it or leave the door open and stink up the room. 1 spray, shut the door & in 5 min the smell is gone. The bottle is small but the liquid inside is mighty. I like that it is small though. It can fit in your pocket on your way to and from the bathroom without calling attention to yourself. Our home will never go without it and Amazon is the best price we've found it.

SPT Polar Bear Ultrasonic Humidifier

I already have a Hello Kitty Crane type Humidifier and almost got another but decided to get this Polar Bear one instead. I'm glad I got this one for my bedroom since it's about half the size of Hello Kitty and is easy to refill (a bit more easier than Hello Kitty).

It's not heavy as the HK one can get and it's easier to clean too. On the Medium setting (which would be halfway to to the MAX settingsince there's no actual words printed on the unit, just dots), it lasted for almost 3 days straight on a full tank and then it turned off automatically when empty. It works really well even though it's smaller.

Hello Kitty does not turn off like this one does when the tank is empty, the HK stays on with a red light glowing. This one really does turn off and doesn't keep using your electricity like the HK one does.

Plenty of steam comes from the nose of the bear on MAX but the things near it will get wet easily fairly quickly. I recommend the Medium setting and you'll get the best output for moisture that isn't too much or too little. Plus it'll last for days (2 days and a half or so for me and even though the tank isn't real big, it lasts a long while more than the HK one. It's really nice not have to refill so often).

Hello Kitty has a soft blue night light feature, but it does get a little hot at the base. No fire issues for me though and I've had mine for years.

The Polar Bear's base gets warm but it's no where near hot and when it turns off due to an empty tank, it really does turns off (unlike HK which stays on and continues to be hot at the base).

I get sinusitis often due to polyps so this humidifier is a must for me. I sleep better because of it.

This unit is probably the safest option/version for your kids since it doesn't get heated like the Crane ones (I do like the Crane units except for the heat issue).

I highly recommend this Polar Bear. It's blue and white and very cute/charming with the bear having a clear blue tummy. (The HK model is hard to see the water level unless you turn on the night light and it's dark in the room.)

I'm thinking of buying another for my sister. Just wish it had a night light feature like the Hello Kitty one does. Thank you for reading my review :)

Hoover Platinum Lightweight Bagged Upright with Canister (UH30010COM) (3/14/09)

Overall, this is a terrific vacuum. The person who will be happiest with this combination is the person who: (1) wants a lightweight vacuum, (2) has mostly carpet in their home, (3) has carpeted stairs, and (4) uses attachments.

I liked my old vacuum, so using the LBU has been an eye-opening experience for me: I didn't realize how much effort I was exerting with my old upright with attachments not only heavier, but so much bending and stooping to change settings or get tools.

At 11 pounds, the LBU is 2 to 3 pounds heavierbut less expensive than competing models. Bonuses: it has a longer cord and a stair cleaning handle.

The supplementary canister has a strap and a 25 food cord. I didn't like it the first time I tried it, but the second time I adjusted the strap to fit me (DUH!), and then I LOVED it! The canister carries the crevice and brush attachments on board, so switching is easy, and the wand is extendable. (I don't use the floor tool, because I use a stick vac on my hardwoods.)

ADDED ADVICE (9/9/09): I have been using my machine about 6 months. About a month ago, I noticed that my machine was no longer expelling fresh smelling air. I assumed that although the bag was not completely full (after 5 months, in a 2800 sq ft mostly carpeted house), the dust from my 15/16yo carpets had clogged it up and so I replaced it (not bad...5 months for one bag). After replacing the bag, it still didn't smell as good as at first. Not nasty, just dusty. Hmmm. So I took out the new bag, vacuumed out the interior of the bag area (carefully, so I wouldn't damage anything), removed the base of the machine and cleaned and vacuumed that out as well (an advantage to a separate canister).

(Edit 11/13/09) That seemed to pretty much solve it for me, but I asked about it when I called about the battery for my Hoover Platinum Collection Linx Cordless Stick Vacuum) (see review), and was told that if you live in a very humid climate (like the Gulf Coast), then a cloth bag machine can develop a funky smell especially if stored in an unventilated area which can be treated by putting the vaccuum out in the sunshine on a hot, dry day. I was told NOT to use carpet fresh or other powders or spray fresheners (like Febreeze) because the product might build up over time and clog up the outer cloth bag.(END OF ADDED ADVICE)

FINGERTIP CONTROLS Wonderful. Many models have this type of control now, and now that I have used it I wouldn't buy one that didn't have it.

HEPA SYSTEM Remarkable. My old vacuum was a HEPA model with HEPA bags, but there is no comparison to this model. The air on this vacuum comes out smelling fabulous. I bought and returned a top rated Kenmore canister that had the exact same amazingly clean exhaust (turns out I don't like using a canister), so I think this is the new hallmark of quality vacuums.

AUTO CARPET HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT Works beautifully. I used to have to stoop down to change the carpet height adjustment on different rugs, but the LBU self-adjustment really works no problem pushing vacuum over even the thickest pile.

CORD PLACEMENT Smart! It comes out the behind the top of the bag rather than the bottom. This means I have even more useable cord, because I don't have to hold part of the cord up to avoid running over it.

CLEANING ABILITY VERY effective carpet cleaner, my 15 year-old carpets look & feel (to bare feet) remarkably cleaner, and even look & feel newer. Excellent at removing pet hair from carpet. The upright is 5.5 amps with direct air flow, like the Riccar & Oreck models listed. The canister is 7 amps. (The combined total is listed in the product description very confusing. I suppose that Hoover thought consumers want a 12 amp machine, but amps are like gas mileage; if you get more suction for less amperage it's like getting better mileage. That's good, not bad. Plus you won't blow your fuses!)

EASILY MANEUVERABLE One expects this of a lightweight model, and all the models I tried turned easily and so forth, but the Riccar & Orecks I tried had to be kicked or tipped up over the edge of an area rug placed onto another carpet. In my home I have area rugs in several rooms on top of the wall-to-wall carpeting, and the LBU moves seamlessly over the edges (even on my thickest area rug) without needing a kick or an extra hard push.

LIFETIME LED HEADLIGHT Brilliant! (Literally!) It is brighter than any other light I have ever had on a vacuum, and is it actually aimed at the carpet! I think having the LEDs has allowed them to aim the light better than with a standard bulb. I am sure other LED equipped models are comparable, so look for this feature,

LIFETIME BELT YES! I've replaced SO many belts over the years and I won't have to do THAT anymore, thank goodness.

STAIR-CLEANING HANDLE Finally. It is comfortably shaped & works well. To use competitors' models on stairs, you have to hold them by the back tube, which I've tried, and it isn't nearly as easy as using the handle. However, see cons below.

CORD RELEASE (6/9/09 edit) I thought it didn't have one until another Amazon customer posted a commment to me (see comments) that it most certainly does; then I tried it again and VOILA! it does. Because I couldn't figure it out before, I got into the habit of just winding up the 35' cord on my arm and plopping it into the top cord holder. The LBU doesn't threaten to tip over at all when I do this, so it works just great and saves me yet another bend and stoop but it's a good feature to have, so I'm glad the engineers didn't leave it out.

CONS

STAIR-CLEANING HANDLE Good grief! I assume it really WAS necessary to vent the motor exhaust toward the stair-cleaning handle (!), so rather than curse the engineers, hold the handle on the right-hand side. It's big enough to do that, thank goodness. Or vacuum the stairs first, before the motor gets warm.

NO BRUSH ROLL ON/OFF Hmmm. This is in the description (and competitors' models are the same), so it means that the vacuum is intended ONLY for people with mostly carpet. (2/1/2011 edit: I have been told by other Amazon users that the brush roll does not touch the floor when put on a hard surface & so I need not worry about damaging my hardwood floors. I have occasionally used it on my hardwood and I have not seen any damage, but I am not sure about this. Up to you.) I have about 80/20 carpet/bare floor, so it works for me. I use a stick vac on my hardwood, and the other person I talked to that has hardwood floors and this vacuum says she doesn't care because her hardwood floors aren't new anyway. But if you have brand-spankin'-new hardwood floors, will you really want to use a brush-roll on them?

EXPENSIVE BAGS Really, $5 each? But they are huge, and they are the very high quality type with fabric-like paper, so we'll see. I used to have to change my old ones ($3) fairly often, so maybe this will work out the same or even cheaper.

CARRY-STRAP FOR CANISTER Not padded. Anyone know where I can buy a pad for a 1 ½ inch strap?

Shop-Vac 1030000 Air Cleaner Filtration System

This unit does a pretty good job and, considering its affordability, I think it's a good value. I like it because it's easy to move around the house for projects that generate some dust. When I am sanding and I have it near by, I can see the dust heading straight into the unit and coming out clear on the other side. So, in my book, it does its job. It doesn't catch all of the dust of course but it's much better than not having an air filter at all.

I'm also a woodworker, however, and I don't think I would ever consider using this as THE air filtration tool for my shop. I think they made a mistake by calling this a Shop Air Cleaner; if you have a woodshop and therefore generate a lot of dust, you may want to look at stepping up to a tool better suited for permanent installation on the ceiling.

For me, this tool is portable so that I can use it outside of my shop. So, if you would like something portable and affordable that keeps your lungs and house a little cleaner, I think it's worth the money.

IRobot Roomba 4299 Discovery

I've been a Roomba user for more than 3 years, so I know the benefits of a little automated vacuum. However we had three primary complaints that iRobot has addressed in this new version:

1. Inconvenience of coming home to a dead battery

2. Difficult to clean

3. Noisy

4. Could not focus on dirtier areas; only cleaned randomly.

1. We have gotten into the habit of, as we are walking out the door, putting the Roomba to work. However, we always used to have the problem of coming home to Roomba with a dead battery (inevitably it would die in the worst spots, like under our bed just out of reach). Then we would have to plug him in to our charger (which we had to shell out sixty bucks for) and wait for two hours to use him again. That was complaint one for the old version.

iRobot has fixed the battery issue on the Discovery. The fast charger (which we had to pay for before) is now built in. Secondly, and what has proven to be my favorite new feature of the new Roomba, the little vacuum automatically finds his docking station when his battery is about dead. I do have two recommendations on this note, however. The docking station appears to work just like a virtual wall, Roomba doesn't know that it is there unless it crosses its path, so you make sure that it is in a wide open room where Roomba is sure to cross its path in its waning minutes of power. Secondly, now you have to be extra sure to Roomba-proof the room so that he doesn't get stuck. If he's stuck he won't be able to find his way back to the charger.

2. The new version has gotten much easier to clean, especially the main brush. All the pieces now pop in and out of place easier and there are no screws to remove any of the pieces that need cleaning. This has proven to be a huge benefit.

3. The Discovery is noticeably quieter than the older versions, especially on tile surfaces.

4. The new line of Roomba Floorvacs comes with sensors that can detect dirt. That was the first thing we tested when we got our Discovery. I had pieces of Styrofoam broken into small pieces and it detected it and automatically performed a spot clean on that area. Then I put him in the kitchen where I had accidentally dumped a bag of cereal on the floor and then managed to step on it...Roomba focused on that area and cleaned up every little crumb.

I love my Roomba. I 100% recommend that you get one. I bought mine at a local store in the mall and had to return my Pro Elite version 4 times before I finally got one that wasn't buggy. Then, under the warrantee, after my fourth one went on the fritz I was able to upgrade to the Discovery for free. So far after 2 weeks, the Discovery has been bug-free.

Nevertheless, because of the many issues that I have had in the past, and as with any new and emerging technology, buy it where you can purchase an extended warrantee and easily return defective devices.

Notwithstanding, buy a Roomba. Even though my wife and I never have time to clean our floors have been spotless since we got our Roomba.

Holmes HWF75PDQ-U Wick Humidifier Filter

This filter is just as good as the original. I have been using one of these filters for over 4 months now and there is no evidence of deterioration or mold whatsoever. I will offer two helpful hints to potential consumers: (1) Make sure you use an antibacterial additive in your humidifier every time you refill your reservoirs and (2) Always rotate your filter upside down each time you add water. This will GREATLY increase the lifetime of your filter. Also, the twin pack is a great buy!

Metro Vacuum ED500 DataVac 500-Watt 0.75-HP Electric Duster 120-Volt

For many years I have used a portable vacuum to clean out my customer's computers when I make house calls. I now have replaced that vacuum and only use the Metro DataVac Electric Duster.

This nifty electric duster is basically one of Metro's powerful vacuum motors enclosed in a small can. It comes with many attachments and outputs a very powerful and consistent stream of air. Unlike expensive air cans which become cold and loose their power after a few minutes of use, the Electric Duster blows hard as long as you need it to.

Some of the cons to using this instead of a vacuum is the fact you will need to take the PC outside to blow it out otherwise dust will go everywhere (you will not believe how much dust comes out of some of them, easily 10 times more than a normal compressed air can would blow out). It runs on standard 120v AC so you will need to have a plug available within range of the (ample) 15ft or so foot cord. If you use it continuously for more than 5 minutes or so the air and can becomes very hot but not so hot that it will burn you or cause problems for the PC. It is also VERY loud, louder than most Vacuums.

The positives vs vacuuming the PC, or using a standard compressed air can, outweigh the negatives. The risk of accidentally damaging a component or creating a static discharge when using a vacuum is higher (although I have never had this happen). A vacuum will do a good job at cleaning the PC, but the force of the air stream from the Electric Duster is very powerful and reaches cracks and crevasses to blow out dust in places I didn't even knew existed! Versus compressed air, aside from the massive savings, you also have no problem turning the Electric Duster upside down or at any angle to position it compressed air cans will blow ice out if you turn them upside down. The Electric Duster is also much smaller and easier to carry around than my portable vacuum. Finally, the Electric Duster is environmentally friendly compared to compressed air cans or even Vacuums which you have to throw away the bags etc.

While the Electric Duster is a bit pricey for people who only need an air can every now and then, for those of you who buy a lot of compressed air, or need something a lot stronger, this is a must have replacement.

UPDATE: Almost a year later this blower is still working strong! The complaints about the black nozzle shooting off seen in other reviews were listened to by Metro and the newer versions have a button/release mechanism. I still stand behind this 5-star review!

UPDATE: Two years now, my original blower is still a strong as day one. I now own two more just for convenience, I keep one in the car for on site work, one at the office, the other at home! The price seems to vary greatly, so look around and you may catch it on sale!

UPDATE: I have added a video of me blowing out dust from two computers. This is typical of the amount of dust in a computer that has never been cleaned for a couple of years in a home that has pets. As you can see in the video, the MetroVac is VERY strong and blows out TONS of dust. It gets in cracks and crevasses that a normal air can wouldn't come close to blowing out, and you don't have to worry about moisture that can be blown out of other compressed air alternatives.

EdgeStar 14,000 BTU Stainless Steel Portable Air Conditioner

Ive had this unit for a few months. Now that its cold and I use it for heating I have to drain the water every hour! I called edgestar and they told me to build a platform to roll this thing onto. They didnt make a hose to help empty the water ether. If you want this for heat, look at another unit that comes with a drain hose.

I have no complaints with the bags. The indicator slide on the front of the vacuum itself doesn't seem to do a real great job at telling me when the bag is full, but it's easy enough to open the front compartment and feel the bag to know if it's getting full or not.

In response to the other review on here that the vacuum isn't that great... I don't find any of the complaints valid except that it isn't great for throw rugs. It does my kitchen and entry way rugs fine since they have rubber backing to hold them in place a little, but my bathroom rugs are not easily cleaned with this. It is not difficult to carry though you just need to have it upright to lock it in place before lifting it so the head doesn't flop down. It's got a nice handle on the back that works just fine for carrying it up and down stairs and it isn't unusually heavy. I use the hand-held Turbobrush for vacuuming the stairs and think it does a good job. As far as the cord having to be totally undone to get it off the holder that is incorrect as well. The bottom hook is a swivel so you just turn it down and slide the whole cord off at once.

We bought this from a local shop after checking out several vacuums and it's exactly what we wanted. I'd highly recommend this vacuum we have kids, 6 cats and a dog and it does an awesome job at keeping up with our filthy floors!

BestAir H85-6 Holmes HWF-62 Replacement Wick Filter

This filter was supposed to be like a "HEPA" filter for a cool mist humidifier. Despite sanitizing my entire humidifier before using this filter, the filter molded over with fuzzy green and black mold within 6 weeks. The regular filter that came with my humidifier was made to last 8 weeks, and it never molded.

This is not as advertised.

However, I do like the metal mesh instead of a plastic mesh, because it's easier for me to recycle, now that I've had to throw out the filter.

I will not buy this again.
