6 Inch Hydroponic Inline Air Carbon Filter Odor Control

the one i received doesn't look like the picture. the bottom, despite the product description, is capped with sheet metal. i'm not sure what i received really. it could be cheap and ineffective; how am i to know? no label on the product. the box has X3069 on it. but that doesn't tell me anything. really strange purchase. a relatively blank box arrives at my door w/ out a packing slip, invoice, or product labeling. would not recommend purchasing mystery items...

i'm beginning to see a trend with Amazon sellers selling (or what i call 'dumping off') what appear to be not-as-pictured or used/slightly scratched stuff. just got a nextgen 400/600 ballast that looks used. 2 very dissappointing purchases in a row.

Hoover Sprint QuickVac Bagless Upright

My wife and I (especially my wife) are very pleased with this lightweight Hoover Sprint QuickVac Bagless Upright UH20040.

We own several vacuum cleaners; our main ones are Eureka THE BOSS SmartVac Model 4870 Type GZ of which we've owned two units for a couple of years now. They are excellent vacuum cleaners and work very well indeed. Maintenance on them is minimal. They are, however, very heavy and that is the reason we bought two of them: one is for downstairs and one is for upstairs. (They were highly rated in "Consumer Reports" and cost about half $150.00 of what other comparably highly-rated machines did at the time.)

We also own a couple of lightweight 'stick' vacuums: a Eureka Lightweight Easy Clean Upright Vacuum Cleaner and a Bissell FeatherWeight Vacuum, Bagless, 3106B (my wife slightly prefers the Bissell to the Eureka). We use these for light touch-up vacuuming and they are excellent for that purpose.

But this new Hoover model almost combines the best of both worlds: it is lightweight (of course not as lightweight as the 'sticks') yet comparable in performance to our 'heavy-weight' Eureka 4870s.

It is so easy to put together right out of the box (no instructions are necessary for assembly) and its use is straightforward. It is helpful and desirable, of course, to read the owner's manual but figuring out this unit is almost (but not quite) a 'no-brainer.'

There is only one tool included with this machine and that's all you'll need. It is a most ingenious tool, combining a crevice tool and an upholstery tool in one compact unit. It has to be seen to be believed.

Everything snaps in place and the machine exudes an air of confidence and of high quality. It has an unusual carry handle which can be used when moving the machine (rather than carrying it awkwardly with the 'main' handle, as is the necessary case with most vacuums).

Using it on stairs is very easy, almost as easy as using a cannister vacuum.

The power cord has to be wound carefully onto its nesting place otherwise it won't fit properly. But that is easy to do. The power cord's length is adequate for our house, as long or longer than all the other vacuums we own.

My wife especially likes the foot-operated on/off switch.

On first use, she exclaimed that the suction was amazing. She said she could not believe it. After she finished vacuuming our entire upstairs with it, she asked me what it sold for. I replied that currently Amazon was charging $70.00 and it listed for $80.00. She then stated very firmly, "That's a bargain!"

Obviously, with it being so new for us, I cannot comment at this time on its longevity or ease of maintenance. Should anything untoward develop, I shall report it here.

But there is one comment I can make: at least one reviewer here states that, to access the belt, one must remove seven (7) screws. That is, in fact, what the owner's manual states.

But, if you look at the bottom of the vacuum, you will see a little chart showing the location of just six (6) screws; that is all that really need be removed. (Not that that makes a whole lot of difference.) I do recommend that you do as we do: remove the screws and put them in an egg carton. That way you are sure not to lose any of them. You will need a moderately long and thin Phillips-head ("crosshead") screwdriver to remove the screws but this should be easy. Such screwdrivers are readily available (if you don't already have one) at any hardware store (or even a dollar-store). (I have not tried removing the screws: it 'ain't' broke so why should I fix it?)

I cannot say, at this time, if this machine will replace our 'big' Eurekas as my wife's main vacuum cleaner, but, so far, she is really enamored of it. (She does most of the vacuuming and she is 'in charge' of what we buy and use in such machines.)

As I said at the beginning of this review, both I and my wife are very pleased with this vacuum cleaner. It's offers heavy-duty suction without the 'heavy-duty price' or 'heavy-duty weight.' If you buy one, I believe you will be pleased too.

We've had this vacuum cleaner for a month now and, if anything, my wife likes it even more than when we first received it. Since it arrived, she has used our 'big' Eurekas only once, much preferring to use this Hoover model which she regards as being lighter in weight, easier to maneuver, and superior in deep cleaning our rugs.

Plus she says that, of all the vacuum cleaners we have ever owned, bag or bagless, this is by far the easiest and most convenient to clean.

And its price is 'right.'

This unit stopped working after only 10 months, and that was only about 4-5 months of use. It runs but doesn't remove humidity. I suppose that either the compressor isn't working or it has lost the charge. Won't buy this brand again.

Austin Air Pre-Filter for HealthMate

I was shocked at how much dust the pre-filter collected. I remove the pre-filter monthly and just vacuum it and reinstall it. The pre-filter helps your filter to last longer.

I have had my HealthMate Plus for 9 years and it has literally saved my health.

Sometimes I even take the pre-filter and hang it in the shower and spray it. The dirty water is in the tub. When I vacumm the pre-filter I tack the pre-filter to the wall and use a hand vac to get it dust free.

Frigidaire FAD704DWD Energy Star 70-pint Dehumidifier

The last 5 dehumidifiers I have purchased (3 Kenmore dehumidifiers and 2 Frigidaires) have all failed within 5 years of purchase and 2 of the 4 have failed within a year of purchase. In my experience the reliability of dehumidifiers in general has diminished greatly over the years. So every time I have to purchase another, I do the research all over again and I find myself going in circles. All brands seem to have similar complaints having to do with longevity.

Consequently, I always purchase an extended warranty now. For the $40 or so that they cost, it gives you some peace of mind that at least you will be able to get a replacement if the dehumidifier should break down outside of the manufacturers warranty period.

My first Frigidaire dehumidifier was the FAD704TDP, purchased in April 2011. That lasted just slightly over a year before breaking down. The compressor failed. I was in luck because even though the 1-year warranty had just expired, the compressor was warrantied for 5-years. Whew, dodged a bullet there.

I had read elsewhere that Frigidaire was notoriously difficult to deal with regarding warranty repair/replacement. In my experience, what Frigidaire does instead of sending you a new unit is to "buy back" your old unit. You don't return it to them, they just send you a check. Fortunately Frigidaire "bought" my defective unit back from me and using the proceeds I was able to replace it with the FAD704DUD. Contrary to some peoples hassles with Frigidaire warranty issues, I had no problem whatsoever with my interaction with Frigidaire. The check was sent to me promptly and with no problems.

I did a lot of further research and decided that all manufacturers had their share of disgruntled customers so I decided to give Frigidaire another chance and purchased my second Frigidaire dehumidifier, the FAD704DUD 70 pint dehumidifier to replace the defective. That one was purchased June 2012 and is still working. However, I live in the North East and right now it's the tail end of winter so the dehumidifier, although it is plugged in and turned on, hasn't actually had to operate since the Fall of 2012. I'm assuming it will work just fine come spring and the ensuing damp weather. But given the history I've had with dehumidifiers, they seem to work no longer than 3-5 years before breaking down, I had an opportunity to get this FAD704DWD and did so even though the dehumidifier I bought last year seemingly still works fine.

The outward appearance of this dehumidifier is identical to the FAD704DUD. The only differences between this 2013 model: FAD704DWD and the 2012 model: FAD704DUD are some minor changes in the specifications:

So as you can see, the FAD704DWD uses 20 less Watts of electricity. But as you'll also notice, the Horsepower has been reduced slightly so I'm not sure if the operation of the unit will be quite the same. I do noticed a very minor change in the tone of fan blower. It sounds like it might be running just a touch slower than the last years model. Very minor, but maybe that's all it takes to reduce energy consumption by 20 watts.

When I received the new dehumidifier and removed the tape that secures the collection tank to the unit, I discovered that the float assembly was not attached where it was supposed to be attached and was just flopping around in the bottom of the tank. There was also a broken piece of clear plastic that I still haven't quite figured out where it came from yet. But I plan to take the entire thing apart to find out where it broke off from. I carefully reattached the float assembly and was good to go.,

I like the profile and appearance of this dehumidifier. It's exactly the same dimensions of last years model. It is not very deep nor wide, but it is somewhat tall. It measures roughly 16" wide, 11" deep and 24.5" tall.

The cord length is 6' 6" and there is a cord wrap on the back of the unit. The plug is a 3-prong grounded plug.

The fan is not exceedingly loud but it's not whisper quiet... perfectly tolerable though. If it's in your basement and not in your direct earshot, you probably won't ever hear it operate at all. The fan blows the exhaust out of the top of the unit which I feel it circulates the air better than blowing it out the side which is where some units have the fan output.

The collection container hold 16.3 pints and has a handle to help you carry it over to a sink. However, It just does not have a decent way to tip the bucket easily to pour the water out. I am always sloshing and spilling water all over the place when I try emptying the full bucket. It's awkward. Plus, 16.3 pints may sound like a lot of capacity but it fills rather quickly in my climate so I use the "continuous operation" method. My dehumidifier is located near my sump pump in my basement. I attach a hose to the dehumidifier and route that right into the sump pump. It's a great way to do it because I do not have to be bothered with emptying the dehumidifier and it is able to run continuously.

Overall I'm very pleased with the Frigidaire FAD704DWD 70-pint dehumidifier. I withold 5 stars simply because of the longevity issues I've discussed. Should this prove to be long-lasting, I will update my review and provide an update.

PurePlug Air Purifier

I purchased this ozone generator to combat the urine/fecal/pet smells coming from our "cat room" on the second floor. There are three litter boxes and two food dishes in the room and often but not always an offensive collection of odors emanates and can even be smelled on the first floor at the bottom of the stairwell. Even with daily cleaning of the boxes, the smells persist. In the past, we used a HEPA filter which was somewhat effective however, it required routine cleaning of the filter element and once this became gunked up the odors returned. Too much hassle, not to mention it was a large contraption. I was looking for an "install it and forget it" solution.

I researched ozone generators and wasn't quite convinced. For one, the EPA does NOT recommend using an ozone generator and claims that not only do they pose a health hazard (mostly for those with respiratory issues/asthma), but they are also ineffective at scrubbing smells. (This research can be found online check it out). Not only that, there are a ton of ozone generators on the market, and they all look the same and appear to come from China, so that's not very confidence-inspiring, either. I took a gamble and didn't expect much return on my $40, but my main objective was to dispel or verify claims on both sides.

The PurePlug unit itself has a small footprint it's a little larger than a night light and plugs directly into an outlet. It includes its own version of a night light, which is the blue semi-circle in the center of the device. This feature is useless, in my opinion. It doesn't emit enough light to be considered a night light replacement, but that's not why I bought it. I figured it was manufacturer hype which it was.

The unit is operated by turning a knob clock-wise. You are able to control the flow of ozone by operating the knob from "off" to full blast the 6 o'clock position is "off". There is an audible sound, like a gas leak, when the device is in use. The sound increases as the knob is advanced. Because I'm not upstairs much, other than when I'm asleep in the bedroom with the door closed, the noise isn't a bother. If you install it near a liveable area, especially a den, it might be distracting.

The ozone generator emits a very strong, distinct smell. You can almost taste it. There have been a lot of comparisons, and the "outdoorsy" characterization is accurate. I would compare it to wormy soil after a rain storm, with a chemical tinge. This may or may not bother you. I've lived in the country all my life, so I'm used to it. Even though this unit is only supposed to service a room between 30-100 sq. feet, the ozone odor is detectable way outside this radius. I can strongly smell it in the connecting hallway and at the door to my bedroom about 15 feet away, and even faintly at the bottom of the stairs. This is with the knob cranked to full blast. I don't think I would want this ozone generator near a liveable area unless there was a strong odor there which needed to be eliminated (in my case, there isn't it's only in the cat room upstairs). Basically, the ozone smell is going to replace whatever you're trying to get rid of. If you can't take it, that might not be a good thing.

This brings me to the most important rating factor does the unit eliminate offensive odors? In my experience, yes, it does. I run the unit about 12 hours a day on the full setting. As mentioned, the cat smells are gone, replaced with the ozone odor. They have not been "covered up", like spraying an air freshener as a masking agent. The room smells cleaner/fresher and I don't feel as gross being in there. In fact, I hung a heavy bag in the doorway and work out in the room now. I turn off the ozone generator an hour or two in advance so that it airs out. Keep in mind that the unit is not going to eliminate smells as they occur. When one of the cats poops, I can immediately detect it but, instead of the odor fanning throughout the house, it's now contained and subdued quickly. This is why I purchased the device and it's performing as I'd hoped.

I will update this review in the future regarding: a) any ill health effects experienced from inhaling ozone, b) how long one should run the device for it to clean a 100 sq. foot room by experimenting with different durations (as noted, it's currently on 12 hours a day), and c) the longevity of the unit itself.

The thing I like about this filter is the oscillating feature although mine has decided not to oscillate after just over a year. The prefilter makes this a better filter than most of its type. The prefilter catches large particles while finer dust is processed in the metal washable filter. There is only one problem with this arrangement however, unless those particles are coated with super glue, they tend to blow right out the front side as evidenced by all the dust on the front of the unit. The problem is that the finer the particle the more dangerous it is for your health, the deeper it can be inhaled. For those mold spores that it DOES catch, it is death through the dehydrating process as air constantly moves over them, that is if they don't break away and fly out of the front over time due to the current.

Cleaning is relatively easy, unless you happen to smoke. in that cause, the little 5 mins soak in warm dishwater just wont cut it. On the bright side, since cigarette smoke it so sticky, maybe it will encourage those pesky dut molecules to stay on the grill they are deposited on.

Still searching for a better filter. I will tell you about the plasama cluster in about 6 mos.

ViagrowTM 6" Carbon Filter

A common problem with basements is mold and the odor that high humidity can cause. I have succesfully removed the mold spores with high efficiency furance filters mounted to several 20 inch box fans sitting in the basement. However, as high humidity arrived in the Spring the odor of a damp basement began to develop. This carbon filter, mounted with a 6 inch duct booster fan from a local hardware store, has successfully removed the mold/odor from my basement. The carbon filter from this vendor came very quickly and was well packed so that no damage came to the filter.

MicroLux ML4000D Series Home HEPA Ionic Ozone Generating Air Purifier Cherry

I've tried at least 5 different brands of HEPA air purifiers (with fan(s)) before finding this one. The number one reason that I disliked all my previous purifiers is NOISE. I'm quite sensitive to certain types of noise, including fan noise. At one point I gave up getting a fanned purifier and got a passive electrostatic-plate purifier for years. However, the passive purifier never works to my expectation (it still works, just not very efficiently).

But after getting a cat for 1.5 yrs, I decided it's really the time to use a more efficient air purifier. After going through many reviews and ratings on Amazon and many other websites, I still bumped into two disappointments (Honeywell HHT-011 and Bionaire BAP-1700) -it seems that my tolerance of noise is much less than average users. Then I found MicroLux ML4000DCH at the 3rd try. I was very skeptical at the beginning because I can't find any info about MicroLux on the web at all, but due to desperation and reasonable pricing, I still decided to give it a shot -and so glad that I did. The unit is quiet enough at its lowest setting not to bother me (Bionaire BAP-1700 gave me really weird dreams during sleep; Honeywell HHT-011 was placed away from me in the living room after running it for 5 mins in my bedroom). Moreover, Microlux ML4000 is the only purifier with more than HEPA filter and Ionizer of all three. Plus it has the lowest power consumption.

In short, I would recommend this purifier to anyone with sensitive ears but still wants clean air.

BISSELL CleanView

I have an Oreck for which I paid almost $350.....I also have a shedding 80 pound English Bulldog. I had vacuumed the rugs/carpet and they still had a fine layer of dog hair over them which I could remove with a dog brush....that is a lot if work. I scanned the products available and came across this one for $80. I vacuumed the kitchen rugs with the Oreck and immediately did a follow up with the Bissell....I filled the Bissell cup ! The Oreck ( and the expensive bags )

is out. This is it for me and I could buy three more and still pay less than the Oreck.

I have really used my CleanAir Ball Air cleaner by Blueair but was concerned that I couldn't find filters for it. After looking everywhere, even on the manufacturer's website, I found these and they are great. They last a long time, depending on how and where you use the purifier. Overall this is a really impressive vacuum cleaner, especially for the price. I wanted a canister type vacuum because my house has a mix of hardwood, tile, rugs and carpet so uprights just don't have the flexibility. But regular canister vacs drive me nuts their little wheels are always jamming or getting caught on the edge of a rug etc... I was pretty much sold on the idea of a backpack vacuum as soon as I saw them on Amazon. This one is pretty much everything I was wanting.

Now this vac is basically a commercial unit rejigged for home use and is missing some of the features you'd expect like a retractable cord, a motorized head etc... but makes up for it with an enormous amount of vacuum power, low noise and an extremely light package.

Good:

* Very light

* Very quiet, much quieter than the Kenmore canister I had prior to this.

* Telescoping steel tube

* The air powered power brush for carpets works well on low pile carpets.

* The main floor attachment head is fantastic

* Having the motor and exhaust up off the ground keeps the vacuum from blowing around cat hair tumbleweeds while you're trying to clean them up.

* Ambidextrous

* Solid, simple latches and cover for bag changing etc... no flimsy but pretty hinged covers.

* Very powerful

* Comfortable to wear while working, comes with waist strap to take weight off of shoulders/back.

The less good:

* Attachments are just friction fit onto the tube, could be an issue years down the road.

* The pneumatic power head doesn't work quite as well as electrically driven ones

* Built in power cord is only two feet long be sure to order a 13 amp or better extension cord too, 25ft works well for me.

* Impossible to not look like a huge dork when using it ;-)

The good points well outweigh the bad and it's currently offered a very good price, definitely worth the cost.

Commercial Air Purifier Cleaner Ozone Generator

Yes, other reviewer, ozone is dangerous. That's why all ozone generators clearly state multiple times that the product is not for use in occupied spaces. However, NOTHING beats ozone for getting rid of lingering odors. You use the thing in an enclosed space, then air it out. Odor gone.

This generator is well made. It makes a ton of ozone, enough to do a whole house. Just don't forget to install the ceramic plates with the screens that make the ozone before you use it the first time. The instructions are not very clear on this. I'm very happy with this item, especially for the price.

Shop-Vac 1030000 Air Cleaner Filtration System

This unit does a pretty good job and, considering its affordability, I think it's a good value. I like it because it's easy to move around the house for projects that generate some dust. When I am sanding and I have it near by, I can see the dust heading straight into the unit and coming out clear on the other side. So, in my book, it does its job. It doesn't catch all of the dust of course but it's much better than not having an air filter at all.

I'm also a woodworker, however, and I don't think I would ever consider using this as THE air filtration tool for my shop. I think they made a mistake by calling this a Shop Air Cleaner; if you have a woodshop and therefore generate a lot of dust, you may want to look at stepping up to a tool better suited for permanent installation on the ceiling.

For me, this tool is portable so that I can use it outside of my shop. So, if you would like something portable and affordable that keeps your lungs and house a little cleaner, I think it's worth the money.

We bought this air purifier just before we brought home our newborn to keep the bedroom air clean. Even during the height of the flu season, none of us has gotten sick once all season (knock on wood). Has many fan settings which help to control the noise level (a little loud on the highest setting, but it also moves a ton of air) We use it on the middle setting and the noise level is no problem at all and moves plenty of air in our 12'x15' bedroom. We turn it all the way up when starting the wood burning stove and it works great for removing any residual smoke odor that inevitably escapes when opening the wood door. Best part is the baby loves the white noise! We lost power for 2 nights in the recent blizzard, and I did notice that I was waking up a little stuffy and didn't quite sleep as well with the unit not running. Once power returned so did my good nights sleep. Very simple control panel, no dirty messy filters to deal with. Had a little bit of a "new appliance smell" the first 2 or 3 days, but that went away quickly. Overall I would give this appliance a great rating. A true set it and forget it. Doesn't even take up much room in the corner. We love it!
