Sunpentown WA-9040DE 9000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner

Pros: Unit works well to cool down the air and the noise is tolerable.

Update I was impressed with customer service: minimal wait on the phone, courteous service and prompt replacement of the broken parts (read "Cons" below).

Cons: unit is made entirely of plastic so it breaks easily. To illustrate this point: while assembling, a plastic clip that holds the hoses to the window vent unit broke off. After 4 uses, my wife noticed that a clip that held one of the hoses to the unit itself had also broken off. Bottom line: it is flimsy.

A second drawback is that the window vent section does not adjust to the size of the window. (A piece that we thought would be used to adjust to window size is actually a piece used for a patio door.)

A third drawback is that the hoses and window vent section are rather unwieldy to handle. Frequently, while trying to place the vents on the window while coupled to the hoses, the hoses come off easily off the unit so it is difficult to adjust everything correctly. And yes, the hoses have to be coupled because it is seemingly impossible to try to put them on after placing the vent section on the window.

Imperial Berkey Water Filter

Outstanding product! You can't go wrong with stainless steel. I camp alot, so out comes the Berkey. Stainless steel is impervious to most pathogens. In this unfortunate age even if you are camping in the mountains you can't be sure of the water so why not have the proper gear for your water you bring a sleeping bag don't you? I don't go camping without my Berkey it just doesn't make sense. Shipping was a breeze too! the item arrived on time and intact. A must buy if you're camping. I won't trust some things to chance.

Honeywell - HEPAClean 99.9% HEPA Air Purifier

I bought this from HomeDepot for $240. I bought this over their smaller $120 model because this has UV light cleaner + also eliminates Fungi, certain bacteria and certain viruses.

The unit is very quiet and has nice features like LCD lit display that shuts off on its own so it doesn't bother you at night, oscillation with a very wide range (about 170 degrees ) which is enough to cover all areas in a room, a timer that can run up to 15 hours I think, 12 levels of cleaning power and an ionizer.

It has 2 reusable HEPA Filters in it (type C) and a couple of washable filters that you can clean every 2-3 months with water. The HEPA filter can be vacuumed and reused. Or you can toss it and buy a new one for $24 from HomeDepot (or cheaper on Amazon).

The unit does send nice cool and fresh air and the air quality does feel better.

My family member would rub their eye when they entered the bedroom upstairs. I think it may be because of either mold spores or general allergies. We just got the roof replaced and getting mold remediation done next week, so we knew we had to keep the air clean. Now, after the unit is on, they no longer rub their eyes or eyes water. This tells us that the unit is indeed cleaning the air. We can do an air quality test but thats ok. The unit is rated for medium-large rooms and recirculates air about 5x times every 12 hours or so which means the air is getting filtered/purified.

Overall, we're happy with the purchase.

Blueair 403 HepaSilent Air-Purification System

Some of the online specs are misleading. The Blueair 403 unit (at least the one I received) actually has 4 speeds, just like the Blueair 402! Even the manufacturer's own website as of this review lists it as having only 3 speeds. The only difference between the 402 and 403 is that the 403 comes with a small electronic timer that is magnetic (you can put it on your refrigerator or on the Blueair unit itself) which shows you when 6 months are up and it's time to replace the filter. This is handy, but not really needed. So, if you can still find a 402 (now discontinued) for a good price, I'd recommend you grab it!

This is a great unit but it is a bit larger than I expected. If you have a small bedroom or office, it may look a bit imposing. It runs very quiet at the two lowest settings and even at the third setting, I found the sound soothing enough to sleep with. In fact, the first night I had it, I put it on the 3 speed setting and found the sound quiet nice and relaxing.

It works very well and is more efficient and quieter than smaller units. The design is also more proven; I compared it with a smaller unit (the 250E) and the 403 works a lot better for a number of reasons (better filter, it pre-charges the particles so that they stick to the filter, and has a larger, thicker filter). The 403 also has a deeper, more soothing and relaxing sound than the smaller unit. Because of the design, you can put things like books on top of it if you want to since it takes in and outputs air from the sides. You can also place it against a wall, something you cannot really do with the smaller 250E unit as it has the filter on the back and outputs air out the top. Also, larger units like the 500 series output air out the top (and sides) so you would not be able to put something on top of those either. I'm not saying I would use my Blueair 403 as a bookshelf or anything, just that it can be convenient to place a magazine or book or two on the top surface at times.

I will now buy a second 403 unit for my living room because I am so impressed. Having two or more of the same series in different rooms throughout the house seems a benefit as you only have one type of filter to buy for them all. However, if your living room is on the large side, you may need a larger unit (such as the 500 series so check your square footage). Note that the 500 series is *much* louder though.

All in all, this is a great unit as it performs very well is *very* quiet and well made. I feel I sleep much better with this unit on and also have much less allergy symptoms including less red and itchy eyes. Even if you don't suffer from allergies, you can still benefit from having nice fresh air all the time. My guess is that you will sleep better and feel more rested when you wake up. As for myself, the Blueair has practically been a lifesaver-I feel a lot more healthy and my allergy symptoms are virtually gone!

Port-A-Cool PAC-FRAME-36 Filter and Frame Package

If you live in areas with lots of cottonwood trees, you will need this filter to keep your evaporative media from plugging up. A little bit of a pain to install because the pipe couplings are placed where they interfere with screws in the frame, but not a problem to modify.

Kitchenaid 8206230A Microwave Hood Charcoal Replacement Filter

Description says 5-1/8" x 5-3/8" but it's actually 5" x 5-3/8". Fits my Maytag over-the-stove microwave and should also fit Kitchenaid or Whirlpool because it's all the same parent company. I noticed some Whirlpool models say the size should be 5-1/8" and Maytag says 5", but it doesn't matter because the filter slot in the microwave will accommodate either size.

Blueair 503 HepaSilent Air-Purification System

Wow. I am shocked to say the results were within 2 hours. Current apartment has black mold. Asthma has been horrible wherever I go.. always using an inhaler and constant sneezing, head congestion, chest congestion, not sleeping, missing work, etc. I do have allergies and sinus issues, but... they were controllable and I was rarely using my inhaler until they started ripping the black mold out of the wall / drywall. I bought this to help until I move in a few weeks. I changed my mind about putting it in the current apartment (didn't want the mold in the new air filter). So I took it to the new place. Remember, no matter where I went, my asthma has been an issue (work, shopping, family). I cranked the Blueair on Max. After 2 hours I sat on the floor to unpack a few boxes. I was noticing my breathing was deeper, not shallow from my upper chest, but from my diaphram. I laid on the floor. I could breathe! It was effortless and not a struggle. No wonder I have been so exhausted.. it had become a struggle to breathe regardless where I was. I worked in the new apt for about 6 hrs. NEVER used my inhaler. Went back to current apt... used the inhaler within 2 hours. ?!?! Until I could FINALLY breathe normally, I didn't realize how this had crept up and was getting worse. Honestly I could cry. Because of the Blueair, I will be suing my apartment building. $400 is nothing to sneeze at (!), and money is very tight, but it is so worth feeling better.

It is loud on max speed, but it was not annoying to me. On low speed, I could barely hear it. So I'm sure the sound isn't anything to keep me up at night.

Sprite FXS-CMS3 Showerhead Extension Arm Flexible FlatHead

this shower head will change your showers forever

originally i set out to look for the best deal on a shower filter or shower heads in the past i had a filter that went between the shower head the replacements were 100 dollars and lasted a year wile trying to replace the filter the plastic case that help the filter broke making the filter useless on research I found that this was a constant problem and about 70% of people who bought plastic shower filter or shower heads had similar problems

so i decided a metal filtered shower head was the way to go so i started looking for metal shower heads that would do the job

I was still looking for a shower head that was not very expensive but more important the filters were in expensive

this one was a great price and being able to angle it in 3 different places would give me more head room being 6 foot that's a plus

the filters are the most inexpensive filters I saw not only that they also filtered out more things than any other filter i found the filters come in 2 packs each one lasting 6 months and the package costs around 25 dollars plus spirit industry's the one who sells them gives coupons out about 6 times a year or more so you can end up spending less

now enough about what an awesome deal this is

when i got it in the mail i checked it out and was glad to see it was very well made and it looks seek i was excited to set it up and take a shower so i went to work installing it and after setting it up and fallowing the instructions on how to get the filter ready for use i hoped in to find my shower experience was changed forever the way the water come out and how clean the water felt was like standing outside in the rain i was so amazed and everyone who has ever stayed at my house and taken a shower with this shower head have all said that it was "the best shower" they have ever had most of them with out me asking although i would have asked them anyway because i think this shower head is amazing

Get this shower head and let life's troubles subside for a half hour

Hoover Air Purifier Replacement HEPA Filter

The Hoover air purifier WH10200 was purchased for home use and it performed extremely well. We run the units nonstop.

So well, in fact, that we bought a second one.

The price point was right, the physical size was right, the energy consumption was minimal, Hoover is a good name, and we needed to maintain clean air in our home.

Some reviewers accurately pointed out that it does generate some noise, which can be an issue when trying to sleep. I consider it white noise and actually welcome it.

Some reviewers also accurately observed that the light panel on top of the unit can be an issue at night in a darkened bedroom. I don't find it annoying at all.

The filters in the original unit lasted about 10 months, so the replacements offer a very cost effective purchase to keep these units running in top form.

3Q Electrostatic Ionic Air Purifier

I bought one of these about a year and 1/2 ago b/c it was cheaper then Sharper Images but was doubtful it would work well or for very long b/c it was cheaper.

I placed it in my bedroom when I got home from work and let it work it's magic, SILENT magic...it is really quiet!, while I sat in the living room. About 45 minutes later I decided to go check and make sure everything was going as it should. I turned the corner and the smell of fresh cool air hit me. It was SO nice! The only way I could describe the air is to say is smelled like mountain top air with a water fall near by. That's how fresh and clean it smelled.

Now, I'm thinking, "OK, it smells good, but is it really working?" I push a button and pull out the filter, yes, it's THAT easy, and I can see little fuzzies of cat hair (I have two) and dust (I have a lot) clinging to the filter! WOW! It actually was cleaning the air!

I promptly went out and bought them for every room in my house and I couldn't be happier.

There is one thing it does that some my consider bad but I like it. When the metal, re-usable filter is dirty and can't hold anymore, the unit tends to make a rattling sound when you turn it on. Nothing loud but once you wipe off the filter, and it really is easy to clean, it doesn't make the noise anymore.

I will always have these, or this brand, in my house. I run all four of my every night when I go to bed and I've had them for about a year and 1/2 and and they are still going strong! I love them!!!

Warm Mist Humidifier, 2 1/2 Gal

I would have rated this a 5 star if the cleaning was easier, but I do not know if such a humidifier exists.

We have hard water and the build up of scale was becoming a problem, even with daily cleaning (yes, you should clean this unit daily). I came up with a solution to reduce and almost eliminate the scale I add a teaspoon of baking soda to the tank when I refill it. The scale is drastically reduced and the unit runs at a whisper quiet. I originally ran the unit without the baking soda and there was some noise, mainly gurgling, that was too loud for me since I am a light sleeper.

There is a black covered heating element that requires cleaning to remove scale. This can be very difficult to remove. I solved this as part of the weekly maintenance when you use vinegar to clean the base. The part with the heating element rests on the base. By adding enough vinegar to fill the well where the heating element engages with the base, and allowing it to soak for 10 or 15 minutes, the scale is easily removed.

I like the warm mist because it helps warm up the room.

Overall, I believe this unit is a great value.

Fellowes CF-300 Carbon Filter

When one buys an air purifier one must be prepared to buy replacement filters as needed. According to the instructions I'll need to replace the charcoal filter after about three months. As of now the original charcoal filter is still in place and seems to be doing the job. The installation of the original was simple and straightforward so I anticipate no problem with this replacement when it is needed.

I have been generally pleased with the AP 300PH Air Purifier by Fellowes; we use it every night in our bedroom to stir up the breeze. We had been using a regular fan but it stirred up the dust as well and left me frequently congested in the mornings. The dust allergy problem seems to have been solved by this air purifier.

Kaz Health Mist Quiet Operation Cool Mist Humidifier

I buy these humidifiers because they are easy to clean & maintain, and they broadcast a nice mist.

There are no gooey-feeling in-the-water-filters to clean or replace. There is one little filter that cleans the air before it enters into the humidifier, but other than that there is none. It doesn't touch the water.

I have used these humidifiers to put in about 3 drops of essential oil to broadcast through my home daily. They work wonderfully. They are much cheaper than the expensive machines made for essential oils & I think they do a better job.

I have been using these humidifiers for years. I hope they don't stop making them!

EcoQuest Alpine Living Air Fresh Air Purifier

This is the second EcoQuest Air Purifier I have owned. My first unit stopped functioning after 5 years of constant use (while it is always disappointing when an expensive item stops working, it literally ran for 5 years straight, so I cannot complain it did a wonderful job and even the best electronics will eventually break down). I waited 6-months, but eventually decided that instead of going through the process of trying to figure out what went wrong and pay someone to fix it I would start fresh with a new unit. It arrived in a very timely manner and within an hour of running the unit in my 2000 sq ft home, I was very pleased to have that "fresh air" feeling throughout the house. I have both cats and dogs and my (old) house has windows that will not budge open. The EcoQuest Purifier is a wonderful unit that keeps dander and dust levels down and makes my home smell fresh and clean. If this unit konks out in a few years... I will buy yet another. They are worth the money.

16x36x1 (15.5 x 35.5) Accumulair Platinum Filter

I have previously ordered this brand and from this company. The filters are awesome! One of my kids has really bad allergies. I have used other filters and this one has seem to work much better for him. Also, the company is SUPER fast with shipping. I had the filter in my house within two days of ordering it.

Hepa Replacement Filter

I purchased this filter from "Allergy Be Gone" via Amazon. It was advertised as "Genuine Honeywell True HEPA filter" but when the product arrived it was clearly made by some other company than Honeywell. And it is not of the same quality as the Honeywell HEPA filter (the Honeywell has soft rubber gaskets while the one that I received has hard plastic gaskets which makes it harder to seal the filter in the unit).

Essick Air Products 4d7800 13gal Wht Vs Humidifier

We purchased one of these through a local Ace Hardware. Within two months the motor died. When we tried to get it serviced through the local company that is licensed for Essickair, we were charged for labor since "that is their contract." I tried to get reimbursed by Essickair for this labor charge and received a rude phone call telling us they wouldn't cover it. Apparently, to get labor covered you have to ship the unit to them. (Which would cost an arm and leg, but they don't care about that.) Avoid this company they will not stand behind their products.

General Aire G99 Media Air Cleaner Filter Gauge

This is an extremely simple device. It does seems to work. It clearly is not a precisin device. For example, the hole they have you drill for the nipple of the device is too big and certainly does not seal against the nipple tightly. You have hard plastic in a hole that is too big for a good seal.

I guess it doesn't matter, but it sure does not instill confidence, either.

SPT 12000 BTU Window Air Conditioner Energy Star WA-1211S

The current Amazon description does NOT do this unit justice! What it tells you is the following:

Energy star Window Air Conditioner

12000 BTU cooling Capacity

3 fan speed

Washable Filter

Temperature Range from 62-86 F

Now, let me tell you what this unit REALLY offers!

---

PROS:

First, it has a remote control. This is a big thing for us... we don't like to have to keep getting up and down whenever we want to change a setting... and settings it has! With the remote, you can not only change the temperature, but also set the timer, fan speed, sleep mode, and operating mode (cooling, fan, "drying" which I'll get into in a moment..., or AUTO)

It has a timer! You can set your air conditioner to shut off after a certain amount of time up to 24 hours in half-hour increments (one-hour increments after 10 hours). This is great for those of us who "accidentally" fall asleep while watching a movie or something with the air conditioner on... it saves a ton on electricity!

The vent is adjustable so you can direct the air. Pretty standard, but Amazon doesn't mention it.

Digital temperature display again, probably seems obvious, but again, Amazon doesn't mention it.

About that 3-speed fan they mention... that would be Low, Medium, or High... but you can also choose "AUTO", which will alter the fan's intensity for you depending on demand.

The filter is not only washable, the unit actually tells you when it needs cleaned, so you don't forget to check it.

It has this thing called "SLEEP" mode... where it apparently slowly rises the designated temperature by 4 degrees over a 1 hour period, then runs at that temperature for six hours before returing to the original temp. I suppose this would make it quieter when you're sleeping, but we don't intentionally sleep in the room we have this in, so it's not such a big deal to us.

Lots of other modes! Here's a description:

FAN mode works like a fan by bringing air in from the outside.

AUTO mode a "smart" air conditioner! Instead of just flooding your room with constant cold air until icicles form, this allows you to set a temperature and stick to it. This may be a standard function in newer air conditioners, but the one we've been using in our bedroom for years didn't have this, so you'd wake up freezing in the middle of the night. In AUTO mode, the AC starts cooling whenever the temperature in your room hits 4 degrees above your desired temperature, and it switches to FAN mode when the temp drops 2 degrees below that. This seven-degree range may seem broad, but it keeps your air conditioner from constantly turning on-and-off-and-on-and-off, like my grandma's nursing home AC used to do.

COOL mode standard air conditioner mode. This is similar to AUTO, except that you only have a two-degree range. The booklet offered this example:

Assume you set your temperature to 70 degrees.

in AUTO mode, it will COOL to 68 degrees, then FAN to 74 degrees, then COOL again...

in COOL mode, it will COOL to 70 degrees, then FAN to 72 degrees, then COOL again...

Basically COOL is the same as AUTO except it'll switch more often.

Then there's DRY mode now this is neat... your air conditioner acts as a dehumidifier, removing moisture from your home, which can make it seem drier without having to spend as much on electricity.

Finally, there's an ENERGY SAVER mode, which can be selected from COOL mode. When your desired temperature is reached, it stops cooling, the fan runs for another couple of minutes, then it "cycles" for two minutes every 10 minutes until the room temperature gets above the set temperature, at which point it COOLs again.

Oh, and it plugs into a regular outlet. This is great, because at the time we needed an AC, all the stores in our city were sold out of everything but 220s, which (I recently learned) do not fit normal outlets.

---

CONS:

It's heavy. The UPS guy dropped it off and I couldn't get it inside until my husband got home. Also, the instructions tell you to screw it into your windows. My windows aren't made of wood, and I don't really want to drill into them anyway, so we chose not to do that. I'll let you know if it slides out or anything, but I think it'll be fine. We might prop it up outside with a 4x4, we'll have to see.

Installing it was really pretty easy, given that we didn't really follow the instructions. If you follow the instructions, best of luck to you.

---

Please comment if you have any questions! I was leery about purchasing this unit when there weren't ANY reviews ANYWHERE, but we did... and I'm glad we did!

---

UPDATE: ONE YEAR LATER.

A couple of comments have suggested this review sounded a lot like a manual. It probably does. We wrote this the day after we got the air conditioner, and wanted to help out anyone else considering buying the unit with as much information as possible. When you get the manual, you probably will not have to read it if you've read this review!

That said, we used this air conditioner for the lower story of our 1940s-era brick home, which does not have working central air. It was used for an area of probably around 650-ish square feet. Our home is not insulated, and any argon gas that may once have been in our windows is no longer there, so this is definitely not the "optimal home", but this unit worked for us. It is sort of noisy, but no more so than the 5000 BTU air conditioner we had from the 1990s. I love the different cooling modes that help us save money on electricity. We usually turn it off at night unless it's an especially hot Ohio night.

One more note it came with foam padding to put around the window opening to more fully insulate from the outside air. This then stuck when we tried to remove it in the fall. We won't be using that this year.

I'm glad to see this review has been helpful to a lot of you. Please keep the comments coming if you have any more questions! It's really a fantastic value.

SPT 15,000 BTU Window AC

We are pleasantly surprised by the cooling power of this AC. It works great on the hottest New York afternoons and cools down our living room and kitchen area (a bit less than 600 sq ft) very quickly.

This AC works great even while using the oven in the attached kitchen area. It is not too noisy definitely quieter than the lower capacity AC we have in our bedroom which we have to run constantly at the high setting to get good cooling.

This AC runs on the standard 110 volt wall outlet.

Broan QS130SS Allure Range Hood

Broan QS130BL

Pros: Quiet fan on setting one, Light like the surface of the sun, Standard setup, Easy install.

Cons: low CFM on setting one of fan, $7 light bulbs

The best thing about the Broan and most likely the reason you are looking at it is how quiet it is. At 1.5 Sones it is practically a whisper with the fan on. Let me tell you it's a blessing and worth the money for that fact alone.

My wife (who does most the cooking, love you) would never turn on our old range hood. I would come into the house to find a haze of smoke and grease hanging in the air and her working in the kitchen. I would turn on our old hood, 5.5 sones and you could not yell at each other to have a conversation.

What I needed was replacement that was quiet (so the wife would use it) gave some light and would fit in the standard opening that was under $150. With the money I saved I could buy cleaners to wash the grease off the walls in the kitchen. HA HA

The Broan QS130BL does this in stars. You will not find a quieter, standard setup, range hood for under $150. Easy to operate, easy to clean, easy to install, super quite and tons of light, I am so happy with it.
