Hamilton Beach 05920 Humidifier Filter

I tried the 'generic' filter last year, thinking it would be the same and I would save money, but found they were just not as good as the Hamiiton Beach. They started out all right, but dried up very soon and need to be replaced more quickly.

Honeywell #50200 True Hepa Air Purifier

  • Honeywell #50200 True Hepa Air Purifier
  • HONEYWELL/KAZ HOME ENVIRONME

This is our 3rd honeywell. We have a son with Life threatening asthma, and these machines get a work out in our home. They are great. They work 24/7. All you have to do is keep them clean, change the filter, put it back together which is a snap and your in business. I would highly recommend these machines!!

Heaven Fresh HF 200 Ionic Air Purifier

I bought three of these many years ago, don't remember exactly how many years but could be as many as ten, and they are still working just as well as they did when I first bought them. I just ordered another one for my truck.

They WILL create dust as ionized particles stick to whatever is close to the ionizer. But hey, those are particles you otherwise would be breathing! Negative ionizers are especially important if you have a room with computer equipment and electric lights, which load the air with too many positively charged ions.

Other ionizers look jazzier in the product photos but this is a compact, neat little unit that does a better job than some others I've had.

What the ad copy doesn't say an important omission is that it comes with a DC adaptor for your car, a great idea if you are driving in auto exhaust much and who isn't?

Vicks Warm Mist Humidifier

I knew i needed a humidifier, as i'm just not used to the dry air of east coast winters. But after shopping around on amazon for warm mist humidifiers, i was horrified by the reviews. Every humidifier seemed to be loud, leaky, and a hassle. I ended up getting this one because of the relatively low price, thinking that if it was as bad as all the others, at least i wouldn't have spent too much on it.

I have no complaints.

On the low setting, it's about as loud as a pot of water boiling in the next room. On the high setting, it might compete with a pot of water boiling in the same room. Every once in a while it gets a bit talkative, but that's rare and doesn't last long. I'm a light sleeper, and this unit never wakes me up.

On the low setting, a full tank of water lasts a little over 24 hours. On the high setting, it goes through in about 8 to 9 hours, perfect to run overnight.

The auto-shutoff works just fine, so i don't even bother turning it off before i leave the house.

It is a bit annoying to clean the unit, but that has a lot to do with the tap water here being less than perfectly clean. We switched to using filtered water, and now the humidifier is actually our way of knowing when to change the filter. When there's build-up on the heating element, the filter isn't working as well anymore.

The daily maintenance takes no more than a few minutes. The weekly maintenance takes longer, but that's mainly because you throw some of the pieces in to soak. It's maybe 10 minutes of effort, plus however long you want to soak the pieces.

In all, i'm very glad i purchased this unit. (And the water tank isn't nearly as blue as it looks in the picture.)

Vornado Air Purifier Carbon Pre-Filters

I bought these to have on hand for my new air purifier. Price was right for the Vornado brand name however I will be looking in the future to see if I can get better deal or off brand replacement filters. Thus the 4 stars instead of 5.......price. For anyone not wanting to risk an off brand filter I recommend getting these as you won't have any problem with proper fit & function.

BWF100 Bionaire Humidifier Wick Filter

{NOTE: the Holmes HWF100 & Bionaire BWF100 are interchangeable}

I bought a bionaire humidifier that uses 2 of these wicks. They're a necessary evil, because the humidifer wont work without them.

My humidifier (a Bionaire BCM645) is basically a glorified self-refilling water bowl, with a pair of wicks dangling down into the water in the lower backside of the unit ... the wicks absorb water upwards, and the humidifier (basically a vertical tube with an exhause fan up up equipped with a humidistat) draws airflow in crosswise through the body of the wicks down below in order to blow humidified air out the top ... it's a simple design that sorta works.

The problem is that mineral deposits build up in these glorified (and overpriced) sponges, and they lose their ability to wick water upwards fast enough to keep up with the rate of evaporation ... the result is that they become dried out and crusty (and slowly stained with mildew), and only stay wet on the part that's dipped in the water.

Now, here's the annoying part, and why I only gave this product 3 of 5 stars ... they're needlessly fragile by design. The manufacturer WANTS you to keep reguloarly buying replacement sponges, just like inkjet printer manufacturers want to keep selling you overpriced ink cartridges. Even though I have fairly soft water, and use a carbon block filter, these wicks only seem to last me about 2 weeks per pair, by default, before they lose their ability to absorb/wick moisture and/or fall apart. Perhaps someday someone will make longer-lasting reuseable cloth replacement filters, but as of this writing, there dont appear to be any available ... because it's against the manufacturer's fiscal interests to make and sell such.

You can save money 2 ways:

1) SHOP AROUND: you can save as much as 50% by shopping around for the cheapest supplier, and scoffing at any implied manufacturer product loyalty. How ? The replacement filters for Holmes (HWF100) and Bionaire (BWF100) are functionally identical and interchangeable. They come 6 to a package (3 pairs).

2) RINSING: These wicks are rather fragile resist the urge to wring them out when rinsing them, or you'll damage them. Instead, fill a sink with body-temperature water, let them soak for 5-10 mins (to let the deposits soften & par-dissolve), then gently press them flat (while submerged) a few times. Then drain them (dont wring them) and reinstall. That should extend their performance by another week or so. Each subsequent rinse will yeild only half the benefit though. At best, you'll be able to double their lifespan.

Bottom line: I dont really recommend these wicks ... but if your humidifier requires them, there isnt much choice. However, if you use the tips I listed above, you can save up to half the cost, and make them last as much as twice as long.

16x20x1 (15.5x19.5) High Capacity Pleated Air Filter MPR 1100

I originally started buying filters online because my size (16x24x1) was not available at the retail stores. Also I replace my air filters on a regular basis and buying them from the home improvement stores can get costly. These are a very good inexpensive alternative. I use a 16x20x1 in a vacation property, and although it is readily available compared to the size mentioned above, I am now hooked on buying them online. A case can last a couple of years.

Austin Air Healthmate Plus Blend Air Purifier

This unit does a nice job on cleaning air and odors. It also has very long life filters. However it is loud (at high settings) and the air comes out one small area on the top side giving the discharge a "blow dryer" like air velocity. It would be better to have the air come out fully around the top instead of one little opening.

16x25x4-MERV12 A/C Furnace Air Filters by Nordic Pure

I am extremely pleased with these filters. I had bought a Filtrete filter at home depot that was supposedly the same size but in actual measurements was way too big for my older Honeywell air cleaner unit.

If I remember right, that mistake cost me thirty dollars or so for the one filter as I mangled the filter trying to force it in.......

I bought the Nordic Pure filters and was delighted that because of their smaller actual measurements they fit perfectly. They were also well packed and arrived in perfect condition. Considering the free shipping they are very reasonably priced for six filters. I would be pleased to buy from this seller again.

Salamander Chameleon Sonoma 329 Double-Width A/V Cabinet

  • Double-width A/V cabinet inspired by ever-popular arts and crafts style
  • Front door panels with contrast vertical wooden strips and black steel inserts
  • Top opening is faced with removable grille that hides center-channel speaker
  • Holds 4 components in main compartment; supports 42-inch TVs (200 pounds)
  • Includes leveler feet; measures 44 x 31.75 x 21.25 inches (W x H x D)

The A/V cabinet has excellent construction, good fit and finish and works as advertized. A nice piece of furniture. I am very pleased with it from that perspective. My only concern is that the finish is different from that shown in the Amazon pictures as well as those on the Salamder site (as viewed on four different computer monitors I checked to see if it was a display problem, but it was not). Rather than a golden hued brown color, the unit is just basic brown. It is still a very nice unit and I will be keeping it, but it is not what I expected.

HoMedics UHE-OC1 Cool Mist Ultrasonic Humidifier

Purchased this at Bed, Bath & Beyond. Humidifier put out a decent amount of mist and was very quiet; much to my liking. I turn on the osculating function and the machine began to rotate back and forth, but began to make horrible grinding noises when it reach the ends of it motion as if it was trying to over rotate. I thought nothing of it and took it back to Bed, Bath & Beyond to exchange it for the same model. After unboxing the new machine, I plugged the humidifier into the wall and the wall socket and machine began to spark! I tried a different outlet and got the same experience.

I will be taking this humidifier back to the store and looking for something different; if two different models of the same humidifier can't work correctly for 5 minutes you should run!

BISSELL 5770 Healthy Home Bagless Upright Vacuum

UPDATE : 2/11/09 See Note Below if you own this unit...

I purchased this as a replacement for a Dyson DC-15 Animal. The Dyson had a high pitched noise that gave both my wife and I a headache. I found I could vacuum with an IPOD on loud, and she could manage it with earplugs. After giving 2 DC-15's a try I started my vacuum search again bought the 5770.

The Good:

1). This vacuum is a great value when compared to the Dyson.

2). The suction is just as good or better than most Dyson's (a sales guy told me the DC-17 has slightly more, but both are great). When vacuuming after the DC-15 the Bissell picked up more stuff. I noticed that the first vacuum with the DC-15 got a bunch of junk out my carpet, but after that it was just a little... This picked up as much dirt as the DC-15 did originally, so I was impressed.

3). It comes standard with the turbo brush, and all the small tools you need. The standard brush attachment is really pretty cool as it is a standard long bristle brush, but then can pull apart and become a short bristle brush in case you need to really scrub something.

4). The hose is great. It's flexible and actually reaches to the top of the stairs (unlike the Dyson).

5). The front end is low to get into short spaces below furniture etc. and it does have a headlight. I thought the headlight was no big deal, but when the extra long cord allowed me to vacuum into a dark room the headlight actually helped out.

6). You can turn the beater brush on and off with a touch of a button. When you stand the unit up it automatically shuts off. The brush also has a separate motor. The Brush is very stiff, like a Dyson, but the bristles are shorter, I believe this makes it easier on your carpet. The Dyson started pulling up lose carpet fibers from the edges of my carpet, I think, because of the longer bristle brush. The Bissell seems to be gentler on my carpet but at the same time it makes the carpet fibers stand right up and look like new. It also has a height adjustment, which, depending on your point of view, is a good thing.

7). It's Quiet! You can actually talk to someone while vacuuming. Don't get me wrong it's still a vacuum, there is still noise, but it's a lower muffled sound that is easy to listen to.

The Bad:

1). It's Heavy! In fact, we almost returned this unit and started looking for something else that would work for us. We ended up keeping the unit, but we took a good couple of days vacuuming the house and thinking it over. Half jokingly I said let's think of this as an exercise machine that just happens to clean the house!

I would recommend taking some time to test this in the store, pushing it around on some carpet (with a pad) like you have at home to get a true feeling for it. Initially (after the wonderfully easy to maneuver DC-15 Ball) it seemed really heavy. After a few days we're used to it and it doesn't seem bad at all.

2). Bissell got the dirt canister wrong, Dyson wins this battle. The canister is in a slight "V" shape so lots of dirt on the top of the pile must somehow compact a bit to fit through a smaller area on the bottom, kind of like going through a funnel. Water flows nicely through a funnel... Dirt does not. The release button is not right on top, like the dyson, so it's a two handed deal to hold the canister and then press the button to release the dirt. Next, the trap door at the bottom is not spring loaded, like the dyson, so it may or may not open, so you might need to flick it open with your finger. The trick with your finger may or may not get you dusty, because the dirt may not just dump out because the nice "V" shape of the unit keeps it in place, maybe this is a good feature? Joking aside, this really could be improved and I hope Bissell does this on future models because it really is a great vacuum.

I justified this dirt canister problem by comparing it to the Dyson... Fluffy stuff (hair, carpet fibers etc.) would get stuck in their dust bin as well, not as much, but it happened. Also, after a few uses the little holes in the inside bottom part of the cyclone clog up so it's a messy job to clean that up. The bottom line here is I think you empty the canister a little more often and your fine, but the nature of either beast is that you're going to have some dirty work ahead of you at some point. It's just the price you pay for superior suction.

Hope this helps!

Update 2/11/09:

Just under the two year mark the brush started to get noisey and smell. Unlike a vacuum from the old days you can't just throw in a new brush and belt. I called Bissell and they had me send the unit back and sent me a refurbished unit.

The Bad: Being a 'Mr. Fixit' kind of guy, I took this apart prior to calling Bissell. (I didn't remember there was a 2 year warranty). The brush bearing cap on one end was worn and the plastic started to melt. There is are mounting/stabilization points near the belt and these were badly worn/melted as well. You cannot fix these mounting points as they are part of the top and bottom of the unit. I have no idea what this would cost to replace, but I'd guess a lot. This seems to be a bad design. Maybe I just had a bad brush, but I don't think so...

The Key is to find the problem prior to the mounting points being destroyed. They do have a bushing that looks like it can be replaced so this should save big $$ on a repair.

What you should do: If you own this unit, or are thinking about buying one, about once a month do the following:

1. Flip the unit over to expose the brush.

2. Remove the junk that gets stuck in the brush.

3. Grab the brush on one end and try to move it up and down or side to side. The brush should be solid and only move round and round.

4. Repeat step 3 on the other side.

Note: If you can move the brush it's starting to go bad. Call Bissell to find the nearest repair facility if your out of warranty. If you're in warranty they'll replace it for you.

I got my refurbed unit today, it works great!

Hoover Windtunnel, Empower

Priced at a fraction of the cost of a genuine Hoover filter, this item outperforms and original. And it is, indeed, washable. Just a minute or so under the tap and it's clean as a whistle. Let it air dry, reinsert into the cleaner, and you're ready to go again. The ability to thoroughly clean the filter increases the cleaner's suction and improves its performance. And you save money, too. So what's not to like.

Eureka AirExcel NLS Bagless Upright Vacuum

I have the original Eureka AirSpeed (the yellow one) which I bought when it first came out. That one is much better than this one, I will say that right off the bat.

This vacuum is easy to put together takes literally 5 minutes. That is a nice plus.

Most of the body is a hard acrylic-like plastic, but it does feel fairly solid/sturdy.

It is not too heavy this one won't give you a backache and you will not have to strain to carry it around or use it in general. It *feels* self propelled, just like the original, although neither actually are self propelled.

You can lay the body down almost flat, so it is easy to get under the table, chairs or even your bed.

The suction power is ok, but I have seen better and I would by NO MEANS compare this to a Dyson like the box proclaims, nor would I compare it to any array of many other vacuums that I have owned over the years. Again, the original AirSpeed has much better suction power.

What I don't like about it are the following -

The hose does not lock into place on the unit. It just slips into a tube on the side. You just pull it out when you want to use the hose/attachments. I find that it works itself loose and starts to come out of the tube on the body while I am vacuuming. Several times I have had to push it back down into place because the dirt/dust/dander was flying up all over the place at me. I imagine that after taking the hose in and out of the tube over time with just normal use, it is going to become even more loose. You are essentially wearing away at both the tube and the hose.

The dirt cup(!?!) Ugh, this thing aggravates me! As the dust collects in these bagless vacs, you get that whole tornado like swirling clump of dirt, hair, etc, right? Well, on this vac it seems that it ALWAYS clumps up, up in the top where the suction empties into the body. So, my dirt cup never actually gets filled. Yes, it is definitely assembled correctly, put together properly, checked/double checked... still clumps up where it's not supposed to.

If you have used a similar type of vac, you will know that the top part of the dirt cup where the filter is, needs to be cleaned off now and then and every once in a while you will get a collection of hair/dirt up in there that you have to sort of dig out from inside the dirt cup (for convenience, instead of taking that whole top piece off) well with this vac, I ALWAYS have a wad of hair/dirt up there that I have to try and get my fingers up between that flanged part and the housing. It's either that or try to get it ut with a pencil etc, or take the whole top piece off too. It is a pain in the rear to have to take apart both sections every single time you vacuum. There are many times where I have to stop in the middle of just doing one carpet because it is clogged up there at the top because all of the debris is not going down into the dirt canister where it's supposed to. It just wants to stay up at the top where it empties into. This is just a bad build design. The original AirSpeed is not like that at all.

I find that it spits stuff back out at my feet even when vacuuming carpet. I expect this to happen with a roller brush on hard floor surfaces, but this shouldn't happen on carpet! I have adjusted the height controls and it makes no difference.

The roller brush cannot be turned off, so it makes doing hard surfaces a challenge as it will of course spit things back out at you. You cannot turn the brush off on the original yellow version either, so I was used to that, but I will say that the original works better on hard floors than this one.

I find that I have to go over the same areas a few times just to pick up random pieces of lint or fuzz. Vacuuming should not be this difficult or require this much work! Our bedroom carpet is a dark navy blue, so I see every single fuzz, lint, hair etc. I can see what it's not picking up. Makes me wonder about the light colored rugs where not every little thing shows up so much unless it is a darker color... wonder what it is leaving behind.

Using the hose and attachments is just fine. The hose is rather long, plus it stretches a good bit too, so you can easily reach more places. The upholstery head with spin brush is nice for pet hair on furniture or cleaning the carpet in the car, the stairs, etc. I even do my mattress now and then with it and I use it to get under the bed in the center where the vac itself can't go. The small crevice tool is great, much like any crevice tool. Same with the dusting piece you can dust shelves etc as well as curtains and drapes, of course. I like the dusting piece for vacuuming the leather sofa. It helps get the little random dog hairs better and easier than just the hose alone. (We have a short haired dog).

When I turn the vac off, it makes sort of a clicking/ticking noise and sounds as if it is dying off. It makes you think there is something in the beater/roller bar/brush that is hitting against it as it slows down to stop once it is powered off. There is nothing there though, so I have no idea why it does this. The original doesn't do this.

All in all, I can not recommend this vacuum at all. Stick to the original yellow Eureka AirSpeed, if you like the AirSpeed series. That one really is excellent for the price. Never thought I would be complaining because a product doesn't "suck," but here I am...

ATTITUDE Natural Air Purifier - Eucalyptus & Lavender

I really like the way these smellit smells like real lavender & eucalyptus essential oil, not an artificial scent. I have three pets (including 2 cats), and these help reduce the smell considerably. I'd probably buy these again, but they're definitely not miracle workers. In particular, they won't do much good (if any at all) if they're not in an area that isn't getting good air circulation. For the price, though, I'm satisfied with the purchase.

Frigidaire WF3CB Puresource 3 Replacement Filter

For almost two years I just thought my Fridgidaire refrigerator was just slow to make ice and super slow to fill my glass with water. I do use a lot of ice when I make a drink so I also thought it was just me. It wasn't until my filter light on the fridge came on that I decided to buy a new filter. I ordered this filter and a few days later it ended up at my house. I put it in and I could NOT believe that for the past two years I've been just dealing with a bad filter. I put the new one in and my water is pouring out very fast and the ice maker is going crazy. I can't even keep up with the amount of ice it's producing. So...if anyone out there is having issues with their ice maker and water dispenser, you may just have to buy a new filter.

Honeywell QuietCare HEPA Air Purifier

I've had this unit for a week now, and I'm pleased with the results I have got out of it. My bedroom is only about 140sq feet, but since this is rated for larger rooms than mine, I am able to run it on Medium rather than High and still get some nice filtering from it. I run it on Low while I sleep, turn it off when I wake up, and run it on Medium or High for a couple of hours before I go to bed each night. I try to keep my door shut while it is on.

I'm an asthmatic and allergic to my two cats, and have been suffering for the last month (we have had them for a couple of years now). I haven't been able to figure out why I've suddenly begun having symptoms again, but it has been problematic to say the least, and I've had to use my inhaler daily, as I typically wake up with asthma symptoms. I decided that since I could not find the cause of my problems (we tried changing their litter type, brushing them daily, changing their food, and doing a thorough clean-up of my room), I would try to purify my bedroom's air while I sleep, since that is when I generally have problems. The first night I still woke with asthma symptoms, but since the second night I'm completely free and can breath much easier at night. I believe this has helped me sleep better, as I no longer struggle to breath each night.

The unit is quite loud in a room of my size, unless it is on Low (it's no louder than my room fan when it's on Low). My computer is in my bedroom, and I use headphones if I'm using it, so that I may run the purifier on Medium or High. Otherwise, after a day of getting used to it, I no longer notice that it's there. You would not want to put this in a medium or large bedroom, unless you purified during the day and turned it to Low or Off while you slept.

Honeywell claims that their HEPA filter is cleanable and only needs to be vacuumed every 6 months. The unit also requires an activated carbon prefilter to eliminate odors, and mine came with the initial prefilter and two additional free prefilters (yours may not have this, it appears to be a special offer). There is a small display on the unit where it displays your programmed settings (which I did not find as useful as I had hoped), and where it also reports how dirty your filters are. If the HEPA filter is truly cleanable, then this will be a very cheap air purifier to maintain, compared to other models which require you to purchase a $20-40 filter every few months.

Oh! I almost forgot to mention how convenient the remote is! I don't have to get up when I decide to take off my headphones or turn on my television, I can just hit a button on the remote and swap it to Low or Off. This is such a convenient feature that should not be overlooked, if you spend a lot of time in the room where you'll keep this unit.

Alen A350 - Allergen Reducing HEPA Style Air Purifier

I purchased the Alen A350 after a lot of research. Our bedroom is quite large but we keep the unit fairly close to the bed. We noticed the improvement immediately (we've had for approx 4 months now). The next to highest speed is what we prefer and it is not super quiet but, hey it's a fan what do you expect? When we want, we drop the fan speed down a notch and it is quiet. Very simple to operate right out of the box, and is effective. I recommend.
