Hunter 30836 4 in 1 Small Room Air Purifier

We bought this to use in the bedroom, but it's unsuitable because of the noise it makes. It emits a fan-speed-dependent squeal that is very annoying when you are trying to sleep.

I did an inspection, thinking it might be a bad bearing, but that does not appear to be the case. With the motor turning under power, the noise is present. With the motor coasting down, only the expected "white noise" is produced. It seems like a motor design problem.

The unit uses an induction motor (the same kind of motor used in noisy vacuums). Single-phase induction motors are notorious for this kind of noise if they are poorly designed.

We did not use the unit but for one night, so can't say for sure if it cleans air adequately. It uses a typical "99.9%", 0.3 micron filter -plus a UV light and a so-called "oxygenating catalyst" -so it should clean about the same as the typical design.

Do not buy this to use anywhere that quiet or just pleasant "white noise" is desired. The motor noise is very grating to the ear.
